S&P Global Ratings Chief Economist Paul Gruenwald: US Perceived as a Less Reliable Partner

Paul Gruenwald, the global chief economist at S&P Global Ratings, recently visited India, where he shared insights on various economic topics during an interview with the Times of India. Gruenwald discussed the current state of the U.S. economy, the effects of tariffs on global trade, and highlighted India’s robust economic growth. His observations reflect a shift in the economic landscape, emphasizing both challenges and opportunities for countries navigating these uncertain times.

Shifting Perspectives on the U.S. Economy

Gruenwald noted that the outlook for the U.S. economy has improved compared to earlier this year. In April, concerns about tariffs and their potential negative impact on growth dominated discussions. However, he pointed out that the actual effects of tariffs have been less severe than initially anticipated. The effective tariff rate in the U.S. has stabilized around 17%, significantly lower than the rates proposed at the outset of tariff discussions. This reduction, coupled with minimal retaliation from other countries, has contributed to a more favorable economic narrative.

Despite ongoing policy uncertainties in the U.S., Gruenwald emphasized that the macroeconomic story is looking brighter. He explained that while there are still risks, particularly related to investment and trade policies, the overall economic environment is showing signs of resilience. The anticipated boom in capital expenditures and data centers could further bolster growth, suggesting a more optimistic trajectory for the U.S. economy in the coming months.

India’s Economic Landscape

When discussing the Indian economy, Gruenwald highlighted its unique position in the global market. He pointed out that India, along with Brazil, faces unresolved tariff issues that could soon be addressed, potentially alleviating some uncertainty. He noted that many countries, including India, are reassessing their international trade relationships, particularly in light of the U.S.’s perceived unreliability as a trade partner.

India’s relatively closed economy provides it with a buffer against external shocks, allowing it to navigate these challenges more effectively. Gruenwald remarked that this trend reflects a broader shift away from traditional economic models, encouraging countries to diversify their trade and investment strategies. As nations adapt to changing global dynamics, India is positioned to manage its risks while exploring new opportunities for growth.

Investor Sentiment Towards India

Gruenwald expressed confidence in India’s economic prospects, labeling it the fastest-growing major emerging market. He noted that the growth baton has shifted from China to India, with the latter benefiting from favorable economic conditions. India’s potential for sustained growth is significant, with projections indicating a trajectory of 6.5% over the coming years.

He emphasized that if India can maintain this growth rate, it would represent a commendable achievement, especially when compared to China’s growth model, which relied heavily on capital deepening. Gruenwald believes that India’s focus on productivity and sustainable growth could lead to a bright economic future. The ability to achieve consistent growth rates of 6% to 7% would position India favorably on the global stage, showcasing its resilience and adaptability in a rapidly changing economic environment.
