America’s aging and poorly maintained roadways are prompting cities and states to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance safety and efficiency. As traffic fatalities rise and public works budgets tighten, local governments from Hawaii to Texas are implementing AI-driven solutions. AI Dashcams in Hawaii
Hawaii is taking a proactive approach to road safety with its “Eyes on the Road” initiative, which distributes 1,000 AI-enabled dashboard cameras. This program aims to address a troubling increase in traffic deaths by automatically detecting issues such as damaged guardrails, missing road signs, and worn pavement markings. Alerts generated by the technology enable crews to respond swiftly to these hazards. Richard Browning from Nextbase, the company behind the system, emphasized that this technology allows for continuous monitoring rather than sporadic inspections. Roger Chen from the University of Hawaii, who is involved in the program, noted that the state’s unique geography and aging infrastructure complicate maintenance efforts. He highlighted the logistical challenges of transporting equipment to the islands. The urgency of this initiative is underscored by a recent lawsuit settlement of $3.9 million after a driver died due to an unrepaired guardrail. By October, Hawaii had already recorded 106 traffic fatalities in 2025, surpassing the total from the previous year.
San Jose’s Innovative Street Sweeper Cameras
In San Jose, city officials are expanding a pilot program that utilizes cameras mounted on street sweepers and parking enforcement vehicles to identify road hazards. The system has proven effective, accurately detecting potholes 97% of the time. Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized the importance of collaboration among cities to share data in a centralized repository, which could significantly enhance the effectiveness of such initiatives. San Jose is also a founding member of the GovAI Coalition, established in 2024, which includes representatives from California, Minnesota, Oregon, Texas, Washington, and Colorado. This coalition aims to leverage AI technologies to improve road safety and maintenance across multiple states.
Texas’s Comprehensive Roadway Assessment
Texas, boasting more roadway miles than the next two states combined, is harnessing AI tools to evaluate its extensive road network. The Texas Department of Transportation is utilizing AI to assess street signs, analyze traffic congestion, and scan its vast network of roads. Jim Markham from the department noted that AI has been instrumental in identifying outdated signs across 250,000 lane miles, effectively serving as a “force multiplier.” Additionally, Texas employs systems like StreetVision, a mobile tool that detects dangerous driving patterns. In one instance, the technology identified sudden braking caused by a bush obstructing a stop sign, highlighting how AI can pinpoint infrastructure issues that require immediate attention.
Preparing for the Future of Transportation
Experts believe that these advancements are crucial steps toward preparing infrastructure for a future where human-driven and autonomous vehicles coexist. Mark Pittman, CEO of Blyncsy, which collaborates on the Hawaii dashcam initiative, stated that most new vehicles will soon come equipped with built-in cameras. He emphasized the need for infrastructure that accommodates both human drivers and automated vehicles, advocating for a seamless integration of technology to enhance road safety and efficiency. As cities and states continue to adopt AI solutions, the potential for improved road conditions and reduced traffic fatalities becomes increasingly promising.
