Top Credit Cards for Diwali Shopping: Discover the Best Cashback, Rewards, and Discounts This Festive Season

Missed out on the exciting online sales for your favorite festive purchases? There’s no need to fret, as the discounts are still rolling in! With the festival of lights approaching, experts anticipate a fresh wave of offers, including discounts, cashbacks, and convenient EMI options. The period from September to November marks a peak shopping season for India’s top e-commerce platforms, where online marketplaces strive to capture consumer attention while banks vie for customer loyalty.

Festive Discounts and GST Savings

The festive season has become a battleground for India’s leading e-commerce platforms, with Flipkart and Amazon at the forefront. This year, the lower GST rates have made shopping even more appealing, with both companies claiming to have passed on significant savings to consumers—Rs 300 crore in total, with Flipkart contributing Rs 200 crore and Amazon Rs 100 crore. As shoppers flock to digital payment apps, many overlook the potential benefits of using credit cards. The right credit card can provide up to a 10% discount, along with ongoing cashbacks and rewards that extend beyond the festive season. HDFC Bank, SBI, and ICICI Bank dominate the credit card market in India, holding over 57% of outstanding cards. This strong presence is reflected in the festive offers, with Flipkart providing additional discounts for ICICI and Axis Bank cardholders, while Amazon promotes SBI cards.

According to Ashish Lath, Founder and CEO of SaveSage, festive sale offers typically apply across a bank’s entire card portfolio, rather than favoring a specific card type. He emphasizes that savvy cardholders, especially those with premium cards, can maximize their rewards throughout the year by utilizing bank reward platforms like HDFC SmartBuy or ICICI iShop. Sumanta Mandal, Founder of Technofino, advises consumers to carry credit cards from multiple banks, particularly ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and SBI, to take full advantage of the various offers available.

Top Credit Cards for Festive Savings

For those focused on maximizing their savings during the festive season, the SimplyCLICK SBI card is a popular choice. Amazon is currently offering up to a 10% instant discount for SBI cardholders, making it an attractive option for larger purchases like televisions or refrigerators. However, shoppers should be aware that using instant discounts may sometimes result in the withholding of reward points. Mandal notes that while headline festive discounts are consistent, the additional value depends on the card’s rewards structure and the shopper’s spending habits.

The CASHBACK SBI card is another excellent option for everyday online shopping, offering 5% cashback on most online transactions (up to Rs. 5,000 per statement cycle) and 1% on offline purchases. This card is particularly beneficial when e-commerce platforms rotate their bank partners, ensuring consistent savings even outside major sales events. Co-branded cards, such as the Amazon Pay ICICI Bank card, provide additional perks. This card is free for life for Prime members and offers 5% cashback on Amazon purchases, 2% at partner merchants, and 1% elsewhere. An Amazon Pay spokesperson highlighted that this co-branded card was used for one in nine orders during the opening hours of the Great Indian Festival, showcasing its popularity among festive shoppers.

Premium and Mid-Tier Credit Card Options

Different banks adopt various strategies when it comes to credit card offerings. Kashif Ansari, an Assistant Professor of Finance at OP Jindal Global University, explains that ICICI Bank has modified its rewards for premium cards, which previously had lower rates. HDFC Bank employs a tiered system, offering the best cards to high-income customers while upgrading others based on spending patterns.

The HDFC Millennia card is tailored for young professionals, providing 5% cashback on purchases from major online partners like Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, and Swiggy, along with 1% on other transactions. A festive spend of Rs. 50,000 across these platforms can yield cashback of Rs. 2,500. At the premium end, the HDFC INFINIA card is invite-only and offers five reward points per Rs. 150 spent, translating to around 3.3% back. This card can enhance rewards above 10% through HDFC SmartBuy, especially during festivals when it combines instant discounts with reward points.

Choosing the Right Card for You

Selecting the right credit card is crucial for maximizing savings during the festive season. The SimplyCLICK SBI card is ideal for those focused on sales, while the CASHBACK SBI card is perfect for households seeking consistent cashback. Heavy online shoppers can benefit from the Amazon Pay ICICI and Axis Flipkart cards, while young professionals will find value in the HDFC Millennia card. Premium spenders can enjoy unparalleled benefits with the HDFC INFINIA card. With careful planning, the right credit card can significantly enhance your Diwali shopping experience, providing both immediate savings and long-term cashback rewards.
