Adobe Forecasts 520% Surge in AI-Enhanced E-Commerce for 2025 Holiday Season
The U.S. holiday shopping season is set to reach new heights, with online sales projected to hit $253.4 billion this year, marking a 5.3% increase from last year. According to a report by Adobe Analytics, Cyber Monday is expected to remain the peak shopping day, while Black Friday and Thanksgiving Day will also see significant growth in online spending. Factors such as consumer demand for discounts, the rise of mobile shopping, and the increasing use of artificial intelligence in the shopping experience are driving this surge in online sales.
Predictions for Major Shopping Days
Adobe Analytics forecasts that Cyber Monday will once again be the largest shopping day of the year, with sales anticipated to reach $14.2 billion, reflecting a 6.3% increase from the previous year. Black Friday is also expected to experience robust growth, with projected sales of $11.7 billion, up 8.3% year-over-year. Additionally, consumers are expected to spend $6.4 billion online on Thanksgiving Day, which represents a 4.9% increase compared to last year. The early start to online sales is contributing to this upward trend, as shoppers begin to seek out deals ahead of the holiday weekend.
Consumer Trends Driving Online Sales
A significant factor behind the expected increase in online sales this holiday season is the consumer demand for discounts, with products anticipated to be offered at an average of 28% off their listed prices. The report highlights several trends that are shaping the shopping landscape, including a growing preference for mobile shopping. This year, mobile devices are projected to account for a record 56.1% of online spending, up from 54.5% last year. The convenience of larger-screen smartphones is likely contributing to this trend, making it easier for consumers to shop online.
The Rise of AI in Shopping
Adobe predicts a substantial increase in the use of generative AI for shopping this year, with AI traffic expected to surge by 520% year-over-year, particularly in the ten days leading up to Thanksgiving. A survey of 5,000 U.S. consumers revealed that 53% plan to use AI services for research before making purchases. Additionally, 40% indicated they would seek AI recommendations, while 36% would use it for finding deals and 30% for gift inspiration. The report suggests that AI will be particularly popular in categories such as toys, electronics, jewelry, and personal care.
Growth of Buy Now, Pay Later Services
The holiday shopping season in 2025 is also anticipated to see a rise in buy now, pay later (BNPL) services, which are expected to generate $20.2 billion in online spending, marking an 11% increase from the previous year. This growth is expected to be driven by a significant milestone on Cyber Monday, where BNPL spending is projected to reach $1.04 billion, up 5% year-over-year. Furthermore, social media is expected to play a crucial role in driving online sales, with advertising revenue projected to increase by 51% compared to last year. Top spending categories this holiday season include electronics, apparel, and furniture, with projected sales of $57.5 billion, $47.6 billion, and $31.1 billion, respectively.
