Shaheed Balwant Singh (16 September 1882 – died March 1917 in Lahore Jail) a freedom fighter and served in the British army for 10 years. He was born on 16 September 1882 in Jalandhar district Khurdpur village.
Shyamlal Gupta ‘Parshad’ (16 September 1893 – 10 August 1977), a fighter, journalist, social worker, and teacher of the Indian freedom struggle. He was the author of the flag song ‘Vijayi Vishwa Tiranga Pyara‘, the catalyst during the Indian freedom struggle.
Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi (16 September 1916 – 11 December 2004), considered to be synonymous with Carnatic music and was the first Indian singer to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award. The songs are sung by him, especially the bhajans, are very popular among the people even today. The country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru called her the Queen of Music, while the vocal queen Lata Mangeshkar called her ‘Tapaswini’.
Prasoon Joshi a famous lyricist of Indian cinema. He is not only known as ‘Advertising Guru’ in the advertising world, as well as is the executive chairman of the international advertising company ‘McAnn Ericsson’. He is playing the role of Creative Director of this company in the continent of Asia. Along with these professional activities, he is a sensitive writer, his name is one of the top composers of songs and ghazals in Bollywood. He has also received a ‘National Award’ for the song ‘Maa’ from the superhit film ‘Taare Zameen Par’. Joshi was born on 16 September 1968 in Almora, Uttarakhand.

Death Anniversary
16 September in Indian history is observed as the death anniversary of the following personalities:
Jahanara (23 March 1614 – 16 September 1681), the eldest daughter of the Mughal emperor’s Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. She died on 16 September 1681.
Jwalaprasad (1872 – 16 September 1944), a renowned Indian engineer and vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University in the year 1936. He also worked in the preparations for the first and second ‘Delhi Durbar’. The influence of Indian architecture on the buildings of the University which is visible today is the result of their understanding. He was instrumental in the improvement of Manikarnika Ghat and Harishchandra Ghat of Kashi. Jwalaprasad died on 16 September 1944.
Lieutenant Colonel A. NS. Tarapore (18 August 1923 – 16 September 1965), an Indian soldier awarded the Param Vir Chakra. He received this honor posthumously in 1965. His full name is ‘Ardeshir Barjari Tarapore’ and his companions used to call him ‘Adi‘. The ancestors of Tarapore were related to the army of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He died on 16 September 1965.
