How a Government Fellowship Transformed One Scholar’s Journey

Access to higher education is critical for scholars looking to fulfill their academic and professional dreams. However, financial challenges and familial obligations can often hinder those ambitions. A shining example of how government support can alleviate these barriers is Priyanga G, a 27-year-old Ph.D. student from Puducherry, who has successfully navigated her educational journey with the help of the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste (NFSC) Scheme.

Before receiving the NFSC fellowship, Priyanga encountered significant financial strain and family pressure as she pursued her Ph.D. However, her resolve to contribute to research remained steadfast. In November 2022, she began to receive fellowship assistance, which dramatically eased her financial burdens and allowed her to focus on her studies.

With the fellowship’s support, Priyanga was able to afford expensive research materials that cost between ₹10,000 and ₹15,000 without hesitation, consequently enhancing her research efforts. Additionally, the NFSC fellowship opened doors for her to participate in two international conferences abroad, experiences that enriched her academic journey. Among the highlights was the opportunity to bring her parents along, a moment she described as unforgettable and made possible only through the fellowship.

Priyanga did not stop there; she also presented her research at over ten international conferences in India, showcasing her dedication to advancing knowledge in her field. The support from the NFSC fellowship has been crucial in her pursuit of a Ph.D., providing her with invaluable international exposure and bolstering her career prospects.

“This government fellowship has been a turning point in my journey, as it has not only supported my research but also given me the strength to grow, learn, and make my family proud,” Priyanga shared. Her story encapsulates the transformative power of fellowship programs in facilitating higher education and research for underprivileged scholars.

Priyanga G’s journey reflects the positive impact of the NFSC fellowship, demonstrating how it has enabled her to tackle the challenges of pursuing advanced research amidst financial and family pressures. Her experience illustrates that with the right support, ambitious scholars can achieve their dreams and contribute meaningfully to their fields.
