National Award-winning filmmaker Vinod Kapri is set to captivate audiences with his upcoming film, Pyre, which will release theatrically across India on October 23, 2026. Nestled in the stunning backdrop of the Himalayas, the film tells the poignant story of an ageing couple whose lives revolve around their home and memories as they await the return of their children, who have ventured away in search of better opportunities.
A Unique Casting Choice
Pyre features debut actors Padam Singh Kapri, 80, and Heera Devi, 70, in the lead roles. Both hail from Uttarakhand and had never faced a camera prior to this project. Their casting adds a layer of authenticity to the film, which is set in a remote village in the Kumaon Himalayas. The narrative delves into the emotional landscape of a couple who have spent a lifetime together, while also exploring the evolving dynamics between parents and children separated by migration.
Padam Singh, portraying a character named after himself, is a retired Army man, while Heera Devi plays Tulsi, a widow, homemaker, and former dancer. Their real-life experiences and natural chemistry bring an unmistakable intimacy and emotional depth to their on-screen relationship.
Director’s Vision
Director Vinod Kapri shared his thoughts on the film, stating, “Pyre is ultimately a film about love, between two people who have spent their lives together, and between parents and their children. I wanted to tell this story through two people who had lived that life themselves. Finding Padam Singh ji and Heera Devi ji was extraordinary. Their relationship, silences and emotions brought a truth to the screen that conventional actors could never have recreated.”
The film has already begun its international journey, premiering at the 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where it won the PÖFF Best Film Audience Award. Since then, Pyre has been showcased at several prestigious international festivals, including the 49th São Paulo International Film Festival and the 30th International Film Festival of Kerala.
Accolades and Distribution
Pyre has garnered significant acclaim, winning 18 international awards, including 15 Best Film Awards across various locations such as Washington, D.C., Chicago, and London. It has also received accolades for Best Director in Serbia and Boston, along with major recognitions for Music, Cinematography, and Sound.
The film will be distributed theatrically by Cinépolis, known for its previous work on Hanuman Ansh. Adding to the film’s distinctiveness is its music, composed by the acclaimed Mychael Danna, recognized for his work on Little Miss Sunshine, Monsoon Wedding, and Life of Pi. The lyrics are penned by the legendary poet and lyricist Gulzar.
