US Trade Representative: India-US Trade Deal Not Expected Soon, Modi and Trump May Discuss Again
The India-US trade agreement negotiations are progressing but remain unresolved, according to United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He stated that discussions are ongoing, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump expected to speak again soon to review the status of the talks. Greer emphasized that while the two sides have identified key sticking points, a final deal is not imminent.
Goyal, Greer hold talks in Milwaukee
Greer’s comments followed a meeting with Indian Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal at the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee. The discussions aimed to advance a “balanced and mutually beneficial” trade agreement between India and the US. Goyal expressed optimism about reaching an interim agreement under the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
In a post on X, Goyal described the meeting as productive, highlighting the focus on concluding a mutually beneficial interim deal. The talks coincided with a phone call between Modi and Trump, where they discussed progress in various sectors, including trade, defense, and energy.
What’s after February framework?
Ahead of Goyal’s visit, the Indian ministry indicated that the discussions would center on advancing the Bilateral Trade Agreement and finalizing an interim deal based on the Joint Statement from February 7, 2026. Goyal’s engagement with his US counterpart is part of ongoing efforts to solidify the trade agreement.
In February, India and the US announced the finalization of the framework for the initial phase of the BTA. However, negotiations have continued due to changes in the US tariff landscape. Goyal previously stated that while the trade pact was “done and dusted,” its execution depends on the US granting India a competitive advantage in the American market.
