UN and Swedish School Launch Sustainable Fashion Initiative

The United Nations has teamed up with the Swedish School of Textiles to revolutionize sustainable fashion with a new collection of Tour Guide uniforms. This innovative collaboration marks the first time a higher education institution has designed uniforms for the UN Headquarters in New York. Approximately 20 design students are crafting these uniforms, which will be unveiled at a fashion show on April 22 before being officially adopted by UN Tour Guides.

Students Lead the Charge in Sustainable Design

In a remarkable effort to blend sustainability with high fashion, around 20 students from the Swedish School of Textiles are working diligently on the new collection. Their designs aim to reflect the principles of sustainability while adhering to the high standards expected by the UN. The upcoming fashion show at the UN Headquarters will serve as a platform to showcase these innovative uniforms, which will soon be worn by Tour Guides who greet over 200,000 visitors each year.

Benjamin Dousa, Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, โ€œAs a key partner to the UN, Sweden is proud to contribute to the SDG agenda in this unique and tangible way.โ€ He emphasized that the uniforms exemplify Swedish innovation and sustainability, showcasing the exceptional work of the students involved in the project.

UN’s Commitment to Sustainability and Youth Empowerment

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed underscored the importance of the new uniforms, noting that they represent more than just clothing. โ€œThe UN Tour Guides are the first faces millions of visitors see when they come to the United Nations,โ€ she said. โ€œTheir new sustainably made uniforms designed by young people embody our commitment to sustainability and the power of youth to drive change.โ€

The uniforms will serve as a storytelling medium, educating visitors about sustainable practices and encouraging them to consider how their lifestyle choices can contribute to global sustainability goals. This initiative aligns with Sweden’s established commitment to responsible development and positions the country as a leader in sustainable fashion.

A Collaborative Effort for a Sustainable Future

This groundbreaking project is made possible through the collaboration of the UN Department of Global Communications and the UN Office for Partnerships, along with support from the Swedish Government and funding from the University of Borรฅs and the Paul Frankenius Foundation for the Swedish University of Fashion & Textiles. Mats Tinnsten, Vice Chancellor of the University of Borรฅs, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, โ€œThis collection confirms that the Swedish School of Textiles is one of the best fashion schools in the world.โ€

He expressed pride in the students and project team, emphasizing that their work demonstrates the potential for creating sustainable fashion.
