‘Made in India’ Smartphones Expand Internationally: Exports Surge to Rs 2.59 Lakh Crore

India’s electronics manufacturing sector has experienced substantial growth over the past decade. Mobile phone exports surged 165-fold, increasing from approximately Rs 1,500 crore in 2014-15 to around Rs 2.59 lakh crore by 2025-26, as reported by Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw in Parliament. Domestic mobile phone production also saw a remarkable rise, expanding about 33 times during the same period.

Electronics output expands nearly seven times

The broader electronics manufacturing landscape in India has similarly flourished. Production escalated from roughly Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26. Additionally, electronics exports grew nearly 11 times, climbing from nearly Rs 38,000 crore to Rs 4.24 lakh crore over the decade. Vaishnaw attributed this growth to targeted government policies aimed at bolstering electronics manufacturing across various segments, including semiconductors and memory chips.

Semiconductor programme focuses on fabs, packaging and chip design

The Semicon India Programme, launched in January 2022, is a key initiative supporting the establishment of semiconductor fabrication units, display fabs, and packaging facilities, along with enhancing indigenous chip design capabilities. Vaishnaw noted that two companies are currently engaged in memory chip production in India. Micron manufactures DRAM, NAND Flash Memory, and Solid State Drives, while Sahasra produces NAND Flash Memory.

The minister also highlighted that global memory chip supplies have tightened due to rising demand from artificial intelligence servers and data centers, leading to increased prices. The Union Cabinet has approved Semicon 2.0 to further strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem, aiming to create opportunities in semiconductor manufacturing and chip design.
