Silver Prices Surge to Rs 1.71 Lakh/kg Amid Supply Issues

Silver prices soared in Delhi on Friday, marking a significant increase of Rs 8,500 to reach a record high of Rs 1,71,500 per kilogram. This surge is attributed to strong safe-haven demand and ongoing supply constraints in global markets. In contrast, gold prices experienced a slight decline, with the rates for 99.9% and 99.5% purity gold falling by Rs 600 each. The fluctuations in precious metal prices reflect broader market dynamics influenced by geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties.

Silver Prices Reach New Heights

On Friday, silver prices in Delhi surged dramatically, closing at Rs 1,71,500 per kilogram. This increase of Rs 8,500 follows a previous closing price of Rs 1,63,000 per kilogram on Thursday. Over the last three trading sessions, silver has gained a total of Rs 17,500 per kilogram, marking one of the most significant rallies seen in recent months. The All India Sarafa Association reported these figures, highlighting the growing demand for silver as a safe investment amid economic uncertainty.

Market analysts attribute this surge to a combination of factors, including a weakening dollar and heightened risk aversion among investors. The ongoing supply constraints in global markets have further fueled this demand. Dilip Parmar, a research analyst at HDFC Securities, noted that the recent fluctuations in gold and silver prices are indicative of a broader trend driven by economic conditions and investor sentiment.

Gold Prices Decline Amid Market Volatility

In contrast to silver, gold prices have seen a slight decline. The rates for 99.9% and 99.5% purity gold fell by Rs 600 each, bringing the prices down to Rs 1,26,000 and Rs 1,25,400 per 10 grams, respectively. This decline follows a peak where gold reached record levels of Rs 1,26,600 and Rs 1,26,000 per 10 grams on Thursday. Analysts suggest that the easing of gold prices is a response to the shifting dynamics in the market, particularly as investors reassess their positions in light of recent economic developments.

The fluctuations in gold prices are closely linked to the performance of the US dollar and global economic indicators. The prospect of a Federal Reserve rate taper has contributed to lower US Treasury yields, diminishing the dollar’s appeal. This situation has prompted a flight to safety among investors, further influencing the demand for precious metals.

Market Influences and Future Projections

Market analysts are closely monitoring the ongoing developments that impact precious metal prices. Manav Modi, an analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, pointed out that silver has entered a phase of steep backwardation, indicating a significant supply tightness that is not being matched by rising demand. This situation has led to increased volatility in the domestic market, with premiums surging and creating disparities between silver ETFs, futures, and exchange-traded contracts.

Globally, spot gold has seen an increase of $16.61, or 0.42%, reaching $3,992.80 per ounce, while spot silver rose by 1.52% to $50.01 per ounce. The recent crossing of $51 per ounce for silver internationally highlights the growing interest in this precious metal. Analysts attribute this trend to dovish signals from the Federal Open Market Committee, which suggests potential rate cuts amid signs of a weakening US labor market.

Geopolitical Tensions and Supply Deficits

The current geopolitical landscape and economic uncertainties are contributing to the volatility in precious metal markets. The ongoing US government shutdown, which has now entered its second week, is causing delays in key data releases, adding to market unpredictability. Experts note that geopolitical tensions, along with steady inflows into ETFs and central bank purchases, continue to provide long-term support for bullion.

The Silver Institute has projected a fifth consecutive annual supply deficit for silver in 2025, indicating structural tightness in the global market. Analysts believe that a combination of potential Federal Reserve rate cuts, fiscal uncertainties in the US, and persistent supply shortages could sustain silver’s bullish momentum unless there is a significant stabilization in global risk sentiment. As the market evolves, investors will need to stay informed about these dynamics to navigate the complexities of precious metal investments.
