SAIL Reports Record Production and Strong Sales Growth in August 2026
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has announced impressive sales figures for August 2026, marking a significant period for the company in terms of both production and sales performance. The month saw SAIL achieving its highest output of hot metal, crude steel, and saleable steel for August ever recorded.
In comparison to August 2025, SAIL’s crude steel production rose by 8%, reaching 1.68 million tonnes (MT) from last year’s 1.55 MT. Hot metal production experienced an even more substantial increase of 9%, growing to 1.78 MT compared to 1.63 MT in the same month last year. Saleable steel also saw an uptick, with a 1% rise to 1.69 MT from 1.66 MT in the corresponding period.
Sales Surge and Inventory Efficiency
SAIL reported remarkable year-on-year growth in overall sales volumes in August, achieving double-digit increases. Total sales hit 1.871 million tonnes, marking a 13% increase from the previous year’s figure of 1.654 million tonnes. Additionally, cash collections surged by 23%, reflecting strong financial health.
The company also recorded its highest sales in multiple value-added product categories, including cold rolled, galvanized, and alloy steels. The efficient management of inventory was highlighted by a notable reduction, indicating effective supply chain coordination and rapid market responsiveness.
Rail supplies to Indian railways rose by 5% year-on-year to 123,000 tonnes, compared to 118,000 tonnes the previous year. Notably, SAIL achieved record supplies in the Long Rails category, delivering 112,000 tonnes, an increase of 11% over the prior year. Furthermore, SAIL strengthened its financial position, successfully reducing borrowings by ₹870 crore since March 31, 2026.
Consistent Growth from April to August 2026
Continuing this momentum, SAIL’s cumulative sales for the April to August 2026 period reached 7.71 million tonnes, reflecting a growth of 5.6% compared to the same period last year despite global market volatility. The finished and processed steel segments showed robust movement, aided by an improved product mix, increased regional outreach, and strong domestic demand. Cash collections during this five-month span similarly showed growth, demonstrating effective commercial practices and timely customer payments.
Dr. A.K. Panda, SAIL’s Chairman and Managing Director, commented on these achievements, stating that the company’s record production levels and sales momentum signify a successful alignment of operational capabilities with financial management. He also noted that ongoing expansion projects and a positive demand outlook position SAIL to enhance its growth trajectory while playing a significant role in meeting India’s steel consumption needs.
