Empowering Waste Pickers: NAMASTE Cards Launched in Delhi
In a significant move for the recognition of sanitation workers, Shri Ramdas Athawale, the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, inaugurated the issuance of NAMASTE Cards for waste pickers in the Najafgarh Zone of Delhi. The ceremony took place at the MCD Community Hall in Matiala and marked a pivotal moment in the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) initiative aimed at enhancing the safety and dignity of sanitation workers across India.
Supporting Sanitation Workers
During the event, over 300 waste pickers gathered to receive their NAMASTE Cards, which signify formal recognition and support under the NAMASTE scheme. This initiative not only seeks to improve their socio-economic status but also aims to provide occupational safety and access to health and social security benefits.
Healthcare Coverage Extended
In addition to the NAMASTE Cards, Minister Athawale distributed Ayushman Cards to the participants, extending essential healthcare coverage to these integral workers. This dual initiative underscores the government’s commitment to elevating the living conditions of those who play a critical role in maintaining the cleanliness of urban spaces.
