Scene 1: Shanaya’s Distressing Confession
The episode begins with Shukwinder noticing that Shanaya is in the guest room. She is surprised and asks, “Shanaya, what are you doing here?” Shanaya looks at her with a serious face and says, “I came here to commit suicide.” Shukwinder is shocked and says, “What? Why would you say such a thing?” Shanaya replies, “Because my family doesn’t care about me. They won’t be upset even if I die.” Shukwinder can’t believe what she’s hearing. Shukwinder steps closer and says, “That’s not true, Shanaya. Your family loves you.” Shanaya shakes her head and says, “No one loves me. So I decided to die.” She seems very sad. Then, Shanaya picks up a knife and says, “This is the best idea to die.” Holding the knife, she adds, “I will die right here, in front of you.” Shukwinder gets very worried and says, “Please, put the knife down.”
Scene 2: Shukwinder’s Attempt to Console
Trying to calm her down, Shukwinder says, “I thought you were a happy girl. Why are you doing this?” Shanaya looks away and says, “It’s my life. I have the right to make decisions about it.” Shukwinder replies, “Sometimes we feel weak, but that doesn’t mean we should end our life.” Shanaya asks, “How will I regret this decision after I’m dead?” Shukwinder says, “Don’t talk about dying. Let’s find a way to solve your problems.” Shukwinder says, “If you share your problem with me, I will support you.” Shanaya remains firm and says, “I’m going to die; that’s it.” Shukwinder asks, “Why do you want to die?” Shanaya refuses to answer and warns, “Don’t try to stop me.” Shukwinder says, “You weren’t like this before.” Shanaya replies, “My life wasn’t like this before.” There is a moment of silence between them.
Scene 3: Shanaya’s Firm Decision
Shukwinder asks gently, “What do you want, Shanaya?” Shanaya says, “I want death because there’s no use living.” Shukwinder says, “Why do you feel that way?” Shanaya looks down and says, “No one loves me; that’s why I want to die.” Shukwinder says, “That’s not true. Everyone loves you.” Shanaya looks at her and says, “You’re lying.” Taking a deep breath, Shukwinder says, “I love you, Shanaya.” She pauses and then continues, “I wanted a grandson. I thought you would be a boy because we already have a granddaughter, Palki.” Shanaya listens quietly. Shukwinder explains, “I wanted support in our old age, so I wished for a grandson.” Shanaya asks, “Can’t a granddaughter give that support?” Shukwinder replies, “Girls can give support but not like boys.”
Scene 4: Debate on Gender Equality
Shanaya says, “Girls and boys are equal nowadays. Your thinking is outdated.” Shukwinder says, “A girl can’t take care of her parents after marriage. She goes to live with her husband. A boy stays with his parents and takes care of them.” Shanaya argues, “Even boys send parents to old age homes. It’s girls who care about their parents the most.” Shukwinder says, “Some boys don’t care, but many do. What’s wrong with wishing for a grandson?” Shanaya says, “I felt bad because you wanted a grandson, but I was born.” She looks sad. Shukwinder asks, “Can you keep us in the Luthra house after you marry?” She adds, “Society is like that; we can’t change it.” Shanaya says, “We can change anything if we want to.” She seems determined. Shukwinder says, “We get nothing because of a girl. That’s why there’s a difference between a boy and a girl.”
Scene 5: Standing Up for Girls
Shanaya says firmly, “Girls are better than boys; that’s it.” She stands tall. Shukwinder looks at her and says, “Maybe you are right, but society thinks differently.” Shanaya replies, “Then we need to change how society thinks.” The episode ends with both of them standing in silence, deep in thought.
