iPhone Users to Replace Siri with Gemini and Alexa

A significant transformation is on the horizon for iPhone users, but it will initially be exclusive to Japan. Apple is set to introduce a feature that allows users to replace Siri with any third-party voice assistant, as revealed in the latest iOS 26.2 developer beta. This change enables users to directly access their preferred voice assistant by pressing and holding the Side button, marking a notable shift in Apple’s approach to voice technology.

Japan gets the first official Siri alternative

Apple’s recent documentation indicates that iPhone users in Japan will soon have the ability to customize their Side button settings. Users with an Apple Account registered in Japan and a device located in the country can assign the Side button to launch alternatives like Google Gemini, Amazon Alexa, or any other compatible voice assistant app. This means that when users press and hold the Side button, they will be able to access their chosen assistant directly, bypassing Siri entirely. However, the effectiveness of this feature relies on developers updating their applications to support Side-button activation. Apple has emphasized that these apps should initiate an audio session immediately, allowing users to start speaking without delay.

The decision to launch this feature in Japan appears to be influenced by local regulations rather than European Union mandates. While earlier speculation suggested that the rollout was in response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple’s documentation clarifies that it aligns with Japan’s Mobile Software Competition Act Guidelines. These guidelines impose requirements that promote competition and interoperability among software applications. Currently, Apple has confirmed that this new feature is exclusive to Japan, although there is potential for expansion to other regions in the future.

Could the Siri replacement feature come to the EU next?

The likelihood of this feature making its way to the European Union is high. The DMA explicitly states that users should have the ability to easily change their default systems, including virtual assistants. Earlier reports hinted that Apple was preparing to allow rival assistants to compete with Siri in Europe. If the rollout in Japan proves successful, it could pave the way for similar changes in compliance with EU regulations, further enhancing user choice in voice assistant technology.

A new era for voice assistants on iPhone

This update signifies a groundbreaking moment for Apple, as it allows third-party voice assistants to take on a more prominent role at the system level. While Siri will still retain exclusive control over certain deep integrations, such as managing iPhone settings, the ability to launch a competing assistant via the Side button represents a significant shift in Apple’s strategy. Currently, only users in Japan will enjoy the flexibility to replace Siri with another AI assistant. However, as global regulations continue to evolve, this feature could soon become a standard offering worldwide, providing iPhone users with unprecedented choices in voice assistant technology.
