iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Designated as Vintage by Apple

Apple has recently added two more iPhone models to its list of vintage and obsolete devices: the iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone 8. This classification means that these smartphones will have limited service and repair options. The tech giant from Cupertino typically designates devices as obsolete when sourcing parts becomes challenging, although it continues to provide software updates for these models.

Details on the iPhone 7 Plus

The iPhone 7 Plus was launched globally in 2016, alongside its counterpart, the iPhone 7. At the time, the starting price for the 32GB variant was set at Rs. 72,000. The device was well-received but was eventually discontinued in 2019 following the introduction of the iPhone 11 series. As part of the recent update, all configurations of the iPhone 7 Plus have now been categorized as obsolete, meaning that users may face difficulties in obtaining repairs or parts for their devices.

Introduction of the iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 made its debut in 2017 during Apple’s first event at Apple Park. It was launched alongside the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X, with a starting price of Rs. 64,000 for the 64GB model. The iPhone 8 was discontinued in 2020 after the release of the iPhone SE (2020). While the iPhone 8 has been added to the vintage and obsolete list, only the 64GB and 256GB storage variants are included. Notably, the 128GB model, which was available for a longer duration, has not been mentioned in this classification.

Understanding Apple’s Vintage and Obsolete Designations

Apple defines a product as vintage if it has not been sold for more than five years but less than seven years. Vintage products are still eligible for service and repairs, depending on the availability of parts. Conversely, a product is classified as obsolete if it has not been sold for over seven years. For obsolete devices, all hardware services, including repairs, are discontinued by Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs), and parts cannot be ordered from Apple.

In some cases, Mac laptops may qualify for an extended repair period specifically for battery issues, lasting up to ten years from the last sale date, contingent on parts availability. Additionally, Apple considers Monster-branded Beats products obsolete regardless of their purchase date. Some notable vintage models include the original iPhone, iPhone 4, iPhone 6S, and iPhone X.

Implications for Users

For users of the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8, this classification means that they may face challenges in obtaining repairs or parts for their devices. As technology continues to evolve, Appleโ€™s decision to categorize these models as obsolete reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to streamline its service offerings. While software updates will still be provided, users should be aware that hardware support will be limited. This change serves as a reminder for consumers to consider upgrading to newer models to ensure continued support and functionality.
