The Indian Navy’s frontline stealth frigate, INS Tabar, commanded by Captain MR Harish, arrived at the port of Malaga, Spain, on 25th August 2024 for a two-day visit. This visit marks a significant step in enhancing the existing bilateral relations between India and Spain, with a focus on strengthening maritime cooperation.
Diplomatic relations between India and Spain were formally established in 1956, coinciding with the opening of the Spanish Embassy in New Delhi. Since then, both nations have engaged in various constructive and collaborative efforts, particularly in the maritime domain. India recognizes Spain’s vital role in ensuring maritime security, given its extensive coastline, and has continuously sought to engage with Spain to bolster these efforts.
The arrival of INS Tabar at Malaga underscores India’s commitment to deepening its ties with Spain. The visit not only aims to reinforce existing bonds but also to explore new avenues for collaboration in maritime security and defense.
During its stay at Malaga, the crew of INS Tabar will participate in several professional interactions with their counterparts in the Spanish Navy. These engagements are designed to enhance interoperability between the two navies, fostering a spirit of cooperation and mutual learning. In a significant event following the port visit, INS Tabar will conduct a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) at sea with the Spanish Navy Ship Atalaya. This exercise will provide both navies an opportunity to observe and adopt each other’s ‘Best Practices,’ further solidifying their operational synergy.
INS Tabar is a versatile and formidable stealth frigate, equipped with advanced weapons and sensors. It is among the earliest stealth frigates in the Indian Navy, forming a crucial part of the Sword Arm Fleet, which operates under the Western Naval Command in Mumbai.
