IndiGo Confirms Sufficient Pilot Workforce as DGCA’s Temporary Duty Relaxations Conclude
IndiGo Airlines has assured that it has sufficient staff, including pilots, to maintain stable operations as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) prepares to end temporary relaxations on pilot duty regulations. This announcement follows significant flight disruptions in early December, which led to regulatory scrutiny and operational adjustments. The airline, which is India’s largest, had previously requested these relaxations after canceling thousands of flights, affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers across the country.
Flight Disruptions and Regulatory Response
In early December, IndiGo faced severe operational challenges, resulting in the cancellation of 2,507 flights and delays to 1,852 others between December 3 and 5. These disruptions impacted over 300,000 passengers and prompted the DGCA to reduce the airline’s winter schedule by 10 percent. The DGCA identified multiple factors contributing to the chaos, including over-optimisation of operations, inadequate regulatory preparedness, and weaknesses in management and operational control. In light of these findings, the DGCA granted IndiGo temporary exemptions from the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms until February 10, allowing the airline to stabilize its operations.
IndiGo’s Staffing and Operational Adjustments
IndiGo has reported that it currently has a sufficient number of pilots to comply with the new duty regulations. According to the airline, it has 2,400 Pilots in Command, exceeding the requirement of 2,280, and 2,240 First Officers, surpassing the needed 2,050. An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed that the airline has integrated the revised rules into its crew rosters and operational planning. The spokesperson emphasized the airline’s commitment to maintaining an optimal workforce to ensure stable operations across its network.
The DGCA has noted that sustained regulatory oversight and corrective measures have helped restore IndiGo’s operations. The regulator’s approval of the temporary relaxations was aimed at supporting the airline’s efforts to stabilize its services while ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Government and Pilot Body Reactions
The Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, informed the Rajya Sabha that IndiGo was granted a temporary exemption from certain provisions of the FDTL norms until February 10, 2026. This exemption is intended to support operational stability in the interest of the public. However, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has expressed concerns regarding these exemptions, highlighting the importance of fully implementing the revised FDTL norms to address pilot fatigue and ensure passenger safety. FIP President C S Randhawa emphasized that air safety must remain a top priority.
Penalties and Future Compliance
Following its investigation into the disruptions, the DGCA imposed penalties totaling Rs 22.20 crore on IndiGo and required the airline to provide a bank guarantee of Rs 50 crore to ensure compliance with regulatory directives. The DGCA also issued warnings to senior management for lapses in oversight and planning, removed a senior vice president from operational responsibilities, and requested a detailed compliance report from the airline. These measures reflect the regulator’s commitment to ensuring that IndiGo addresses its operational challenges and maintains safety standards moving forward.
