Indian Textile Exports to Benefit from Zero Reciprocal Tariff, Piyush Goyal Clarifies on US Trade Deal

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Thursday that Indian apparel exports to the United States will benefit from zero tariff access, provided the raw materials are sourced from the US. This statement comes in the wake of a recent US-Bangladesh trade deal that raised concerns among Indian exporters due to its provisions for zero tariffs on textile exports. Goyal emphasized that India would enjoy similar benefits, aiming to reassure the textile industry amid competitive pressures.

Clarification on Tariff Benefits

Piyush Goyal’s remarks were aimed at dispelling misconceptions regarding the advantages granted to Bangladesh under the new trade agreement with the US. He stated that just as Bangladesh can access zero reciprocal tariffs by sourcing raw materials from the US, India will also have the same opportunity. Goyal responded to claims made by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, asserting that India’s interests in the trade deal are well-protected. He mentioned that the framework agreement is currently being finalized, and the specifics will be detailed in the interim agreement. This assurance is crucial for Indian exporters who are concerned about maintaining their competitive edge in the US market.

Impact of the US-Bangladesh Trade Deal

The US-Bangladesh trade deal has introduced a mechanism that allows certain textile and apparel goods from Bangladesh to enter the US at a zero tariff rate. This provision is expected to enhance Bangladesh’s textile shipments, which could potentially diminish India’s competitive position in the textile sector. The US has reduced tariffs on Bangladeshi products to 19%, slightly higher than the 18% duty applied to Indian goods during the previous Trump administration. Goyal’s comments highlight the need for Indian exporters to remain vigilant and adapt to the evolving trade landscape.

Protection of Indian Agricultural Interests

In addition to addressing textile exports, Goyal emphasized that the India-US trade deal does not affect sensitive agricultural and dairy sectors. He reassured farmers that the majority of their products, including dairy, poultry, and various crops, are excluded from the trade agreement. Goyal stated that approximately 90-95% of Indian agricultural produce will not be impacted, ensuring that farmers’ interests are safeguarded. He explained that the deal has been crafted with a strategic approach, allowing for a calibrated opening of certain commodities to the US market without harming local farmers.

Looking Ahead

As the interim agreement is finalized, the Indian government aims to provide clarity on the benefits that will be extended to Indian exporters. Goyal’s statements reflect a commitment to ensuring that Indian industries can compete effectively in the global market while protecting domestic interests. The ongoing discussions and negotiations will be crucial in shaping the future of India-US trade relations, particularly in the textile and agricultural sectors.
