Indian Maritime University Flourishes in Global Rankings
India’s maritime education landscape has significantly transformed in the last decade, with the Indian Maritime University (IMU) rising to prominence as one of the world’s top maritime institutions. This growth, which includes enhanced collaboration with industry and a focus on research and innovation, was discussed in a recent meeting led by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.
Minister Sonowal emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, IMU has evolved from a primarily classroom-focused institution into a modern university emphasizing real-world applications and future-ready skill sets. The university’s academic programs are now closely aligned with industry needs, allowing students to receive education that prepares them for the challenges of the maritime sector.
IMU’s Rise in Global Rankings
Over the past 12 years, IMU has secured its position among the top 10 maritime universities globally and holds the title of the highest-ranked maritime university in India. This progression reflects the Modi government’s strategic focus on enhancing maritime education and establishing globally competitive institutions. Sonowal pointed out that the increase in registered students for the IMU Common Entrance Test climbed dramatically from 14,751 in 2014 to 73,395, highlighting the rising interest in maritime studies.
Focus on Inclusivity and Skill Development
The meeting also highlighted notable advancements in inclusivity within the maritime education sector, with female cadet enrollment increasing 18-fold. This surge signifies a crucial development, making opportunities in the maritime sector more accessible to women.
Technical consultancy efforts at IMU have also expanded, with project engagements rising from three projects valued at approximately Rs. 64 lakh in 2014 to 16 projects worth around Rs. 10.78 crore today. Additionally, the university has forged numerous partnerships, establishing 22 domestic and four international industry collaborations, as well as numerous academic partnerships to bolster its global presence.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future
Sonowal remarked, “Human capital is the foundation of India’s maritime future,” emphasizing the importance of a skilled workforce as India aspires to become a global leader in shipbuilding. He mentioned the need for ongoing investment in maritime education and proposed organizing a nationwide Maritime Skilling Fair to elevate awareness among young people about career opportunities in this expanding sector.
The next phase of IMU’s growth will focus on modern infrastructure, innovative research, and advanced training programs. Plans include enhancing campuses at Mumbai and Kolkata, establishing Centres of Excellence in Shipbuilding and Maritime Skills, and cultivating research partnerships with both domestic and international institutions. These initiatives align with the government’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, aiming to solidify India’s status as a global hub for maritime education and skilled workforce development.
Sonowal called upon stakeholders across government, academia, and industry to collaborate effectively to achieve India’s ambitious maritime and shipbuilding goals. The collective efforts to address these objectives are vital for improving India’s standing in the global shipbuilding arena.
