BRICS Women’s Meeting Kicks Off in Kochi to Empower Women Globally

Kochi, July 6, 2026: India has officially launched the BRICS Women’s Working Group (WWG) Meeting in the vibrant city of Kochi, Kerala. Under India’s BRICS Chairship for 2026, senior officials from BRICS member nations are gathering for a two-day discussion focused on women’s empowerment and women-led development. The meeting aims to foster collaboration on shared priorities across various sectors.

Strengthening Commitment to Women’s Issues

During the event’s opening, Shri Anil Malik, Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, welcomed delegates and highlighted their common objective of advancing women’s empowerment. He stated, “While geography kept us physically apart, our shared commitment to advancing women’s empowerment has kept us closely connected.” His remarks set a positive tone for what he hopes will be impactful discussions, learning opportunities, and collaborative efforts to enhance the commitment among BRICS countries.

Guiding Priorities for the Discussions

Shri Malik outlined four priority areas that will steer discussions throughout the meeting. These priorities reflect the collective aspirations of the BRICS nations and address pressing global challenges. The areas include fostering resilience through women’s governance and leadership, promoting financial and digital inclusion as key enablers, encouraging women’s entrepreneurship and skill development, and enhancing women’s roles in addressing climate change, food security, and nutrition.

Setting a Framework for Engagement

The Secretary emphasized that these focus areas have laid a crucial foundation for ongoing dialogue over the past months and will be key to guiding the upcoming discussions in Kochi. He expressed optimism that the constructive spirit observed during preparatory consultations would continue, allowing participants to exchange ideas, clarify understandings, and work towards consensus on actionable outcomes.

A Commitment to People-Centric Solutions

The meeting aligns with India’s broader BRICS Chairship theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” reflecting a human-centered approach. Following this WWG Meeting, a Ministerial Meeting is scheduled to take place in Kochi on July 8 and 9, 2026, where further commitments and strategies may be established to continue the momentum generated from these discussions.
