India Strengthens Response to Zoonotic Diseases at National Consultation
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare convened a pivotal National Multistakeholder Consultation in New Delhi today, centered on the National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Zoonoses. This event gathered senior officials from various sectors, including human health, animal health, wildlife, environmental affairs, and academia, to discuss strategies aimed at enhancing India’s readiness and response to zoonotic diseases that affect both humans and animals.
During the consultation, Dr. Rakesh Gupta, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, emphasized the ongoing threat posed by zoonotic diseases globally and within India. He articulated the government’s commitment to fostering multisectoral coordination and integrating advanced surveillance systems through the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) 2.0, among other initiatives to improve public health safety.
Dr. Gupta outlined that the proposed National Action Plan aims to create a thorough strategic framework to bolster governance, surveillance, laboratory capabilities, preparedness, and response mechanisms. Additionally, it will enhance risk communication, research, and monitoring, thereby financially supporting states and union territories in crafting localized action plans aligned with national priorities.
Collaboration Among Stakeholders Essential
Dr. Sujata Chaudhary, Additional Director General of Health Services, highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation among ministries and stakeholders to implement the One Health approach effectively and strengthen India’s defenses against zoonotic threats.
Prof. (Dr.) Ranjan Das, Director of the National Centre for Disease Control, reiterated the critical public health implications of zoonotic diseases, confirming the NCDC’s dedication to enhancing integrated disease surveillance systems.
Launch of Key Resources
During the inaugural session, attendees collaboratively launched two significant technical resources under the National One Health Programme. These include a Learning Resource Package focused on ten priority zoonotic diseases—ranging from Anthrax to Zika—and a comprehensive suite of e-learning modules. These resources aim to empower healthcare professionals, veterinarians, and public health officials in their efforts to monitor and control zoonotic diseases.
Thematic Discussions for Enhanced Preparedness
The consultation featured technical sessions where experts reviewed draft chapters of the National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Zoonoses. Extensive discussions covered vital areas such as governance, surveillance systems, laboratory enhancement, and outbreak response strategies. The importance of expanding sentinel surveillance sites and improving data-sharing capabilities through digital innovations, including AI, was underscored during these discussions.
Future Directions and National Commitment
The recommendations generated from this consultation will be incorporated into the final version of the National Action Plan, serving as a strategic framework that encourages coordinated multisectoral actions across the country. This initiative marks a critical step in furthering India’s One Health agenda and solidifying its commitment to improving preparedness against zoonotic diseases. By fostering collaboration across various sectors, the plan aims to establish a robust response system to mitigate the impact of zoonotic threats, thereby enhancing national health security.
