Indian Buyers Finalize Major Soy Oil Agreement: Traders Commit to Over 150,000 Tons Monthly from South America

Indian importers are ramping up their advance purchases of South American soybean oil, securing significant quantities for delivery between April and July 2026. This strategic move comes as they prepare for a potential surge in palm oil prices next year. The shift in buying patterns has been influenced by soybean oil trading at a notable discount compared to palm oil, a departure from its usual premium status. Industry experts suggest that these actions are driven by expectations of tighter palm oil supplies due to Indonesia’s plans to increase its biodiesel blend rate.

Surge in Soybean Oil Purchases

Importers in India have committed to purchasing over 150,000 tons of soybean oil for each month from April to July 2026. This increase in buying interest follows a period where soybean oil was available at a $20 to $30 discount compared to palm oil. Aashish Acharya, vice president at Patanjali Foods Ltd, highlighted that this unusual pricing dynamic has prompted buyers to secure soybean oil in advance. The anticipated tightening of palm oil supplies is linked to Indonesia’s biodiesel expansion plans, which aim to raise the biodiesel blend rate from 40% to 50% by the end of 2026. Mayur Toshniwal, president of Emami Agrotech Ltd, noted that this significant forward coverage reflects market concerns over potential palm oil shortages due to reduced production and increased usage when the B50 mandate is implemented in Indonesia.

Concerns Over Palm Oil Supply

Traders are also taking precautions against the possibility of Indonesia accelerating its biodiesel plans. Budiman Suwardi from Prime EcoHarvest Commodities warned that if the Indonesian government were to implement the B50 mandate earlier than expected, it could lead to a spike in palm oil prices due to a lack of supply for exports. Currently, officials in Jakarta are deliberating whether to limit the B50 rollout to the public sector to prevent a sharp reduction in palm oil availability. This decision is crucial as it could significantly impact the global supply of palm oil, which is already facing scrutiny regarding its availability.

Impact on Sunflower Oil Shipments

In addition to palm oil concerns, buyers are bracing for tighter sunflower oil shipments due to disappointing harvests in the Black Sea region and Europe. Anilkumar Bagani of Sunvin Group pointed out that sunflower oil prices from these regions are currently $230 to $250 higher than South American soybean oil for the April to July 2026 period. Despite the favorable forward bookings for soybean oil, Acharya noted that current offers for December and January cargoes have risen by up to $110 per ton compared to earlier secured prices. This price fluctuation indicates a volatile market, prompting buyers to reassess their purchasing strategies.

Current Market Dynamics

While palm oil remains approximately $90 to $100 cheaper per ton than soybean oil, some buyers are temporarily shifting back to palm oil. This trend has led to a subdued demand for soybean oil, even during winter, a season when it is typically favored due to palm oil’s tendency to thicken in colder temperatures. Toshniwal remarked that several soybean oil cargoes, totaling between 25,000 and 35,000 tons, have been canceled due to a $50 drop in domestic soybean oil prices. This situation underscores the complexities of the current oil market, where price dynamics and supply concerns are influencing buyer behavior and market stability.
