India Shines at Codex Alimentarius Commission Session in Geneva
India has reached notable milestones at the 49th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49) held in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 6 to July 10, 2026. The country saw seven Codex standards and guidelines adopted under its chairmanship, showcasing its significant role in shaping science-based international food standards. Additionally, the Commission approved India’s initiative to develop a new Codex Standard for Cashew Kernels, further emphasizing India’s influence in global food safety regulations.
India’s Delegation Takes Center Stage
Leading the Indian delegation, Shri Rajit Punhani, Chief Executive Officer of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), actively contributed to the sessions alongside technical experts from FSSAI and the Spices Board. Their efforts were pivotal during the discussions that shaped crucial food safety measures.
Adoption of Key Standards
Among the significant achievements, the Commission adopted the Codex Standards for Dried Coriander Seeds and Fresh Curry Leaves, both crafted under India’s leadership. The standard for Dried Coriander Seeds will enhance trade for this globally sought spice, while the Fresh Curry Leaves standard sets an international benchmark for a herb cherished in regional cuisines.
Furthermore, five additional Codex texts were accepted, all developed under India’s co-chairmanship. These include standards for Vanilla and Large Cardamom that ensure consistent quality for these traded goods, and guidelines focusing on the safe use of water in food production and processing, which promotes both sustainability and food safety. Key measures were also introduced for controlling Campylobacter and Salmonella in chicken meat, aimed at reducing foodborne illnesses linked to poultry.
Support for Cashew Kernels Development
A standout accomplishment for India was the overwhelming support for its proposal to establish a Codex Standard for Cashew Kernels under the Codex Committee on Processed Fruits and Vegetables (CCPFV). This new standard aims to create harmonized quality and safety requirements for cashews—a vital tree nut in international trade. The initiative is expected to facilitate fair trade, reduce trade barriers, and enhance the global competitiveness of Indian exports.
Future Participation and Commitment
In addition to these successes, India was elected as Co-Chair of the newly established Electronic Working Group aimed at exploring New Food Sources and Production Systems (NFPS). This group will assess current regulatory frameworks and identify gaps in Codex risk analysis principles, informing potential future guidance.
India’s achievements at CAC49 highlight its dedication to advancing the global food standards system through scientific innovation and international cooperation. The outcomes are poised to benefit not only Indian farmers and food businesses but also consumers, while contributing to safer food and enhancing the predictability of international trade.
With a strong commitment to collaborating with the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and other member countries, India aims to develop transparent, science-based, and globally harmonized food standards that ensure food safety and promote fair trading practices.
