Empowering Local Governance: Atmanirbhar Panchayat Workshops Expand Nationwide
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj recently conducted Virtual Outreach Workshops on July 13 and 14, 2026, under the Atmanirbhar Panchayat initiative. This program united participants from seven states: Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. The workshops were designed to equip these local leaders with the knowledge and tools necessary to enhance their financial independence through improved Own Source Revenue (OSR).
In his address during the event, Shri Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary of the Ministry, urged Panchayati Raj Institutions to leverage local resources and innovative strategies to establish sustainable revenue streams. He stressed that financially stable Panchayats are pivotal to the vision of a Viksit Bharat, or developed India. Bharadwaj assured participants of ongoing technical support from the Ministry to help translate their innovative ideas into successful, self-sustaining projects aimed at achieving financial self-reliance.
About the Atmanirbhar Panchayat Program
The Atmanirbhar Panchayat Program, a key initiative under the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA), seeks to bolster the financial independence of Panchayati Raj institutions by enhancing their OSR. Through a transparent selection process, the program invites Panchayats to propose creative revenue-generating projects that utilize local strengths and previously untapped resources. Eligibility criteria include a minimum OSR of Rs. 50 lakh for Gram Panchayats and Rs. 1 crore for Block Panchayats, provided they have at least three years left in their term.
Successful proposals will receive technical support to develop them into bankable projects. Funding for these initiatives can be sourced through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions, and alignment with existing government schemes. Institutional partners such as NABARD and HUDCO will assist in project development and financial facilitation.
Focus on Sustainable Revenue Generation
During the workshops, participants were encouraged to explore local opportunities for generating sustainable income streams. The sessions featured presentations from NABARD and HUDCO, a comprehensive overview of the program’s guidelines, and a live demonstration of the Atmanirbhar Panchayat Portal. An interactive question-and-answer segment enabled attendees to fully grasp the framework and implementation strategies of the program.
With this latest effort, the Atmanirbhar Panchayat Program now spans ten states, following previous workshops held in Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, and Kochi. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj invites eligible Panchayats nationwide to embrace this opportunity and contribute their innovative ideas, propelling the nation towards a financially self-reliant and empowered local governance system, in line with the vision for a Viksit Bharat.
