India-Made Cars Thrive in Exports Amid Domestic Market Challenges

India’s passenger vehicle export market is experiencing a remarkable surge, with a nearly 20% increase in shipments during the first half of the fiscal year. This growth comes as domestic manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Nissan, and Volkswagen ramp up their export efforts, shipping a diverse range of vehicles, including electric models, hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs. Maruti Suzuki, in particular, is leading the charge, aiming to export over 400,000 units in the fiscal year 2025-26.

Strong Performance by Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki, the frontrunner in India’s domestic car market, is also making significant strides in exports. The company has reported that it shipped over 200,000 vehicles in the first half of the fiscal year, with models such as the Fronx, Jimny, Swift, Baleno, and Dzire leading the way. Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer of Corporate Affairs at Maruti, highlighted the impressive growth, stating that the company is now exporting in a quarter what it used to ship in an entire year just four years ago. This achievement reflects the success of the “Make in India, Make for the World” initiative. Notably, Maruti has begun exporting the India-made Jimny to Japan, where it has gained popularity. Additionally, the company has launched its first electric vehicle, the eVitara, in export markets, with plans to introduce it in India later.

Hyundai’s Export Strategy

Hyundai has also reported a robust 17% growth in exports, shipping nearly 100,000 units in the first half of this fiscal year, compared to 84,900 units during the same period last year. José Muñoz, the global CEO of Hyundai, praised the quality and cost-effectiveness of manufacturing in India. He emphasized the company’s commitment to making India a key global hub for exporting both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles. Hyundai’s export portfolio includes popular models like the Creta, Grandi10, and Verna, which are shipped to markets in Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Muñoz stated that by 2030, India is expected to become Hyundai’s second-largest region globally, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Make in India.”

Nissan’s Growing Export Hub

Nissan is also capitalizing on India’s manufacturing capabilities, exporting models like the Sunny sedan and the Magnite compact SUV to numerous countries, including 65 nations. Saurabh Vatsa, Managing Director of Nissan, noted that India has become the company’s second-largest export hub in the Africa, Middle East, India, Europe, and Oceania (AMIEO) region. He attributed this success to India’s skilled engineering workforce, efficient manufacturing processes, and a robust vendor and supplier network. Vatsa also highlighted India’s strategic geographical advantage, with well-equipped ports facilitating international shipping to various destinations.

Future Prospects for Indian Exports

The positive trajectory of India’s passenger vehicle exports signals a promising future for the automotive industry. With major manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Nissan ramping up their export efforts, the country is poised to become a significant player in the global automotive market. The focus on quality manufacturing and adherence to international standards will likely enhance India’s reputation as a reliable source for vehicles worldwide. As these companies continue to innovate and expand their export capabilities, the Indian automotive sector is set to thrive in the coming years.
