India Achieves Record Renewable Energy Growth

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced a groundbreaking achievement in India’s renewable energy sector for the financial year 2024-25. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s leadership, the country has successfully added a remarkable 25 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity, representing a significant 35% increase from the previous year’s addition of 18.57 GW. This milestone underscores India’s commitment to sustainable energy and its growing position in the global renewable energy landscape.
Solar Sector Fuels Renewable Energy Expansion
India’s solar power sector has been the driving force behind this impressive growth. The capacity additions surged from 15 GW in FY24 to nearly 21 GW in FY25, marking a substantial 38% increase. This year, India also reached a significant milestone by surpassing 100 GW of installed solar capacity. The rapid expansion of solar energy not only contributes to the country’s renewable energy goals but also plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy independence.
Domestic Solar Manufacturing Reaches New Heights
In a bid to enhance self-reliance, India’s solar module manufacturing capacity has nearly doubled, rising from 38 GW in March 2024 to 74 GW in March 2025. Additionally, the manufacturing capacity for solar photovoltaic (PV) cells has tripled, increasing from 9 GW to 25 GW. The establishment of the country’s first ingot-wafer manufacturing facility, with a capacity of 2 GW, commenced production in FY25. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules has attracted investments worth ₹41,000 crore, creating approximately 11,650 direct jobs and bolstering the domestic solar manufacturing industry.
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Benefits Millions
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has made significant strides, benefiting over 11.01 lakh households by March 31, 2025. Under this initiative, ₹5,437.20 crore has been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance to 6.98 lakh beneficiaries, significantly promoting the adoption of rooftop solar systems. This program not only enhances energy access for millions but also encourages the use of clean energy solutions across the country.
Green Hydrogen Sector Gains Traction
India’s Green Hydrogen sector has also experienced notable advancements. The government has allocated incentives worth ₹2,220 crore for the manufacturing of 1,500 MW per annum of electrolysers, alongside an additional ₹2,239 crore for the production of 450,000 tons per annum (TPA) of Green Hydrogen. The National Green Hydrogen Mission has funded seven pilot projects with ₹454 crore aimed at decarbonizing the steel sector. Furthermore, five pilot projects in the transport sector, supported by ₹208 crore, will introduce 37 hydrogen-fueled vehicles and establish nine hydrogen refueling stations, marking a significant step towards a sustainable energy future. These achievements reflect India’s unwavering commitment to its clean energy transition and its ambition to become a global leader in renewable energy. Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Prahlad Joshi, emphasized that India is on the verge of becoming the third-largest renewable energy capacity holder in the world, showcasing the government’s vision for a sustainable and self-reliant energy future.
