Income Tax Refund Delays: Importance of Filing Revised Returns by December 31, 2025
The Income Tax Department is intensifying its scrutiny of tax returns, leading to delays in income tax refunds for many taxpayers this year. This increased vigilance stems from a focus on verifying deductions and exemptions claimed by individuals. As the December 31, 2025 deadline approaches for filing revised or belated returns, the department has initiated a NUDGE campaign to encourage taxpayers to correct any inaccuracies in their filings, as many claims have been deemed ineligible.
Importance of the December 31, 2025 Deadline
The December 31, 2025 deadline is crucial for taxpayers who need to file revised Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025-26. Failure to meet this deadline may result in delayed refunds, particularly for those whose returns contain errors or missing information. According to reports, the Income Tax Department has begun notifying taxpayers via emails and SMS about ineligible deductions or exemptions they have claimed. Taxpayers are urged to rectify any mistakes and submit revised returns before the deadline to avoid complications. Once the Centralised Processing Centre processes a return, any discrepancies identified will lead to further scrutiny. If issues are flagged after the deadline, taxpayers may not have the opportunity to amend their returns, potentially resulting in additional verification or assessment proceedings.
NUDGE Campaign Encourages Compliance
The NUDGE campaign launched by the Income Tax Department aims to guide taxpayers in filing accurate returns. Chartered Accountant Suresh Surana emphasized that once the December 31 deadline passes, taxpayers cannot revise their returns to correct any errors, even if the return is still pending processing. This campaign serves as a reminder for taxpayers, especially salaried individuals, to ensure their filings align with employer records. Many employees have received notices from the department regarding discrepancies in their claims, particularly concerning deductions under Sections 80C, 80D, or House Rent Allowance, which were not disclosed to employers during tax deduction at source.
Common Reasons for Delays in Tax Refunds
Taxpayers may face delays in receiving refunds due to various reasons, including mismatches between reported income and data from the Annual Information Statement or Tax Information Summary. Errors can arise from excessive deduction claims, incorrect House Rent Allowance, unsupported deductions for insurance, or ineligible donations. Additionally, failing to report income beyond salary, such as capital gains from mutual funds or crypto assets, can trigger notices from the Income Tax Department. Abhishek Soni, CEO of Tax2win, noted that these intimations indicate a mismatch in the return and the supporting data for claimed deductions. Taxpayers are advised to address these notices promptly to avoid potential tax demands or penalties.
Consequences of Ignoring Notices
Ignoring notices from the Income Tax Department can lead to significant consequences, including tax liabilities and interest charges. Maneesh Bawa, a partner at Nangia Global, cautioned that taxpayers should file revised returns within the allowed timeframe to correct any identified errors. Failing to address discrepancies may result in disallowance of claims and increased scrutiny from the department. Taxpayers are encouraged to take these notices seriously and ensure their tax filings are accurate to avoid complications in the future.
