Delhi Engineers Trained on Urban Road Greening Standards
The CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) recently hosted a training program aimed at equipping engineers from the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) with essential knowledge on sustainable urban road development. This event took place at the NDMC Convention Centre and focused on the implementation of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) Standard Framework for paving and greening urban roads across Delhi.
The ceremony commenced with a traditional lamp lighting, signifying the importance of the event, followed by a formal welcome extended to the dignitaries in attendance. Dr. Ch. Ravi Sekhar, Director of CRRI, delivered the inaugural address, joined by Sh. Naveen Bansal, Engineer-in-Chief, and Sh. Ravi Jha, Special Secretary-2 of PWD. Their addresses emphasized the vital role scientific principles in road design play in enhancing air quality and reducing environmental impact by effectively addressing road dust.
Comprehensive Training Agenda
The one-day training featured an extensive curriculum led by a team of expert scientists from CRRI, including Dr. Sampath Kumar, Dr. K. Ravinder, Dr. E. Madhu, Dr. Mukti Advani, Dr. Minal Chandra, Dr. Chintaman Bari, and Dr. Nischal Gupta. The sessions were meticulously designed to cover various aspects of urban road paving and greening principles.
Key Training Modules
Participants received in-depth orientation on the guidelines for paving and greening within the National Capital Region (NCR), with a focus on the principles governing urban space standards and road network planning in accordance with IRC guidelines.
Specific training on carriageway design provided engineers with vital knowledge about standards applicable to diverse categories of urban roads, including standard formats for data collection. Furthermore, sessions on Transit and Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) offered engineering benchmarks crucial for the design of public transport facilities and pedestrian pathways.
Another important aspect covered was the integration of safety measures and urban infrastructure. Engineers learned about essential road signage and markings, as well as how to harmonize various urban utilities—ranging from drainage systems to bus stops and telecom networks—effectively within road designs.
Engaging Discussions and Future Steps
The program wrapped up with an interactive discussion, allowing PWD engineers to engage directly with CRRI scientists. This collaborative dialogue aimed to define clear operational pathways for the effective implementation of what they had learned, ensuring that the principles taught would be applied across Delhi’s extensive road network.
