During her speech, President Murmu highlighted the powerful role that successful artists play in shaping the choices and habits of children and young people. She stated, “When successful artists speak about the benefits of a disciplined lifestyle, millions of children and young people emulate them.” Murmu called on these celebrities to be more discerning about the products they endorse, saying, “I urge popular artists not to endorse products that are harmful to people’s health. A true star is the one who spreads light, not darkness.”
In addition to discussing endorsements, Murmu also addressed the need for respect and social security for all individuals working in the film industry. She emphasized the importance of supporting workers, assistants, and small-scale artists who are trying to establish themselves. Furthermore, she advocated for greater representation of women on juries responsible for selecting films for the National Film Awards, stating, “I would like to see women’s participation ensured in every regional jury.” She added, “Incorporating the female perspective in any field makes it possible to form a holistic human outlook.”
Recent Controversy Over Endorsements
Murmu’s remarks come in the wake of controversy surrounding endorsements by prominent actors. The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration recently issued show-cause notices to Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff regarding their involvement in a Vimal Elaichi advertisement. The FDA alleged that the campaign could be seen as indirect or surrogate promotion of Vimal Pan Masala, a product that is prohibited in the state.
The notices have prompted legal action, with the Delhi High Court dismissing a petition from PB Agro LLP that challenged the Maharashtra FDA’s notices. This situation has raised questions about the responsibilities of celebrities in their endorsements and the potential impact on public health.
