Nationwide Strike: Banks to Close for Three Days Starting Monday – Essential Information for Customers

Banking operations across India are set to face significant disruption as unions plan a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30. This strike, combined with a weekend holiday, could result in a five-day halt to banking services. The timing is critical, as September 30 marks the half-yearly closing for banks, a period involving essential reconciliation and treasury operations.

Customer Advisory Amid Strike

In light of the impending strike, customers are advised to complete any necessary banking transactions before the strike period. Public sector banks have recommended utilizing digital channels to minimize inconvenience. Customers can take several steps to ensure their banking needs are met:

– Complete any branch-dependent tasks before the strike.
– Use mobile banking for transactions.
– Access funds via ATMs.
– Utilize internet banking services.
– Engage with business correspondents (BC points).
– Employ UPI for payments.

If the strike proceeds, services available through these digital channels will continue to operate. The disruption may also impact businesses, government transactions, and international banking operations.

Reasons Behind the Strike

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), representing 90% of the banking workforce, has announced the strike in response to ongoing demands for a five-day banking week. The union stated that it would reconsider its decision if there were any positive developments regarding this demand. A recent conciliation meeting with the deputy chief labour commissioner ended without resolution, prompting the union to proceed with the planned strike.

UFBU’s demands also include updates to pension schemes, a uniform dearness allowance for pensioners, and an option for employees under the National Pension System to switch to the old pension scheme. The union had previously conducted a nationwide strike on September 11 over similar issues.

Government’s Position

During the conciliation meeting, representatives from the Department of Financial Services and the Ministry of Finance highlighted ongoing initiatives for the welfare of bank employees. They acknowledged that the proposal for five-day banking is under consideration but emphasized the need to consult various stakeholders before making a decision. The finance ministry urged the UFBU to defer the strike, citing the negative impact of strikes on banking services and public convenience. The government reiterated its commitment to addressing the concerns of bank employees through constructive dialogue.
