A Republican senator has called for a Senate investigation into Donald Trump Jr.’s financial dealings following revelations about a Russian oligarch’s involvement in his wedding celebrations. Senator John Curtis of Utah has requested the Judiciary Committee to examine whether Trump Jr. benefited from his family’s connection to the White House. The inquiry would also look into his relationships with foreign individuals and any gifts or benefits received.
Curtis, who is not a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to committee chairman Chuck Grassley and top Democrat Dick Durbin. He urged the committee to subpoena Trump Jr. to investigate his business dealings and any instances where his relationship with President Trump may have provided him with undue advantages. Curtis also called for similar scrutiny of Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, emphasizing that there should be no double standards in the treatment of families connected to both parties.
Curtis seeks scrutiny of Jr’s foreign ties
This request places Curtis at the forefront of scrutiny regarding Trump’s family, a topic many Republican lawmakers have largely avoided. Curtis, who was elected to the Senate in 2024, has previously expressed his willingness to challenge Trump on various issues. He described the funding of Trump Jr.’s wedding by a Russian oligarch as “corruption” and indicated he would provide more details soon. Curtis criticized the situation, stating, “A Russian oligarch paid for a lavish wedding after-party for Donald Trump Jr., which to me just stinks. It’s corruption. I don’t like it.”
Earlier, Curtis referenced the Republican-led investigations into Hunter Biden’s foreign relationships, noting that Republicans had extensively used subpoenas in those inquiries and should continue to do so now.
Russian oligarch helped fund wedding celebrations
The controversy stems from a ProPublica report detailing that Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with ties to President Vladimir Putin, contributed to the wedding celebrations of Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas. Kremlev reportedly funded the rental of a private island and a fireworks display. Bettina Trump later acknowledged Kremlev’s generosity in an Instagram post, calling him a “dear friend” who hosted the celebrations after their wedding.
Although Trump did not attend the wedding, he defended Kremlev’s involvement, stating that the funds would be reimbursed. Curtis’ letter to the Judiciary Committee seeks to investigate Trump Jr.’s business dealings, his foreign relationships, and any gifts or benefits received, particularly those that may have leveraged his father’s presidency.

Senator Grassley has not yet committed to launching an investigation. He stated he needs to gather more information before deciding on the next steps. “I’m going to take these requests seriously and sit down with staff and see what we can do,” Grassley said. Senate Majority Leader John Thune also refrained from commenting on the matter. However, some Republican lawmakers have expressed support for Curtis’ request.
