Railway Track Expansion: From 5,036 km to 24,173 km Capable of 130 km/h Train Speeds Over 12 Years
Indian Railways is significantly enhancing its infrastructure to increase train speeds. The length of railway tracks capable of speeds of 130 kmph and above has surged nearly five-fold since 2014. However, punctuality remains a challenge, with an overall rate of 77% in 2025-26, and only three zones achieving over 90% punctuality.
Track Upgradation
The expansion of high-speed track infrastructure has been notable. In 2014, just 5,036 track kilometers, or 6.3% of the network, had a sectional speed potential of 130 kmph or more. By early August 2026, this figure rose to 24,173 track kilometers, representing 22.5% of the network. The length of tracks in the 110-130 kmph category also increased from 26,409 km in 2014 to 62,036 km in February 2026. Collectively, over 80% of the network now has a sectional speed potential of 110 kmph or above.
Indian Railways attributes this improvement to various track and maintenance measures. These include the use of thicker rails, longer welded rail panels, and advanced welding technology. Mechanised track maintenance and rail-grinding machines have also been implemented. Additionally, a web-enabled Track Management System integrates track inspection and maintenance data to enhance planning.
Punctuality Concerns
While punctuality has improved, challenges persist. Indian Railways reported an overall punctuality of 73.62% in 2023-24, which increased to 77.24% in 2025-26 up to February 2026. During this period, 24 railway divisions achieved punctuality rates above 90%, while 19 divisions fell between 80% and 90%. The ministry has cited real-time monitoring and timetable rationalisation as key factors in this improvement.
To address delays caused by fog, Indian Railways has equipped locomotive pilots with 29,848 GPS-based Fog Safe Devices as of January 31, 2026. A Modified Semi-Automatic Stop Signal system has also been introduced for operations in poor visibility. Despite these measures, operational constraints such as congestion, maintenance needs, and unforeseen events continue to impact train timings. The ministry is working to increase network capacity through new lines and gauge conversion projects.
Vande Bharat Trains and Bullet Trains
Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express trains can operate at speeds of 160 kmph, but few sections of the network support such speeds. Most high-density routes are limited to a maximum of 130 kmph. The introduction of Vande Bharat Express trains is expected to enhance average speeds due to their faster acceleration and deceleration capabilities. However, speed is influenced by various factors, including track capability and signalling infrastructure.
Indian Railways is also planning to launch its first bullet train, which will operate on a dedicated track, allowing for higher speeds.
