Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel to Introduce New City Expansion

A sequel to the popular video game Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, is currently under development at CD Projekt Red. Although the Polish studio has kept details under wraps since the project’s announcement in 2022, creator Mike Pondsmith has recently revealed intriguing information. Notably, the sequel will introduce a second city alongside the iconic Night City, expanding the game’s universe and gameplay experience.

New City in Project Orion

In a recent interview with Polish outlet TVGRY at the Digital Dragons Conference, Mike Pondsmith discussed Project Orion and its developments. While he noted that his involvement in the sequel is not as direct as it was with the original game, he has had the opportunity to review the scripts. Pondsmith shared insights about the new environment, hinting at a second city that players will explore. He described his discussions with the environment team, emphasizing the unique atmosphere of this new location.

Pondsmith teased that the second city would evoke a feeling reminiscent of “Chicago gone wrong,” suggesting a darker, more chaotic urban landscape. He confirmed that Night City will still play a significant role in the sequel, but the addition of another city promises to enhance the overall experience. The creative vision behind this new environment aims to provide players with a fresh perspective while maintaining the franchise’s signature style.

Expanding the Cyberpunk Universe

The inclusion of two fully realized cities marks a substantial expansion for Project Orion, potentially making it a larger game than its predecessor. The original Cyberpunk 2077 was praised for its intricate details and immersive world, particularly in Night City. The recent Phantom Liberty expansion further enriched this environment by introducing a new district called Dogtown.

CD Projekt Red has been cautious about revealing too much information regarding the sequel since its announcement. The studio previously stated that Project Orion would push the boundaries of the Cyberpunk franchise, aiming to explore the darker aspects of its futuristic universe. This commitment to innovation suggests that players can expect a more expansive and engaging gameplay experience.

Technological Advancements and Future Prospects

Project Orion is being developed using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5, which promises to deliver cutting-edge graphics and gameplay mechanics. A recent job listing from CD Projekt Red’s Boston studio hinted at the game’s ambitious features, including the most realistic and reactive crowd system seen in any video game to date. This focus on realism and interactivity could significantly enhance player immersion in the Cyberpunk universe.

While excitement builds around Project Orion, CD Projekt Red has not provided a specific release timeline. Industry experts speculate that the game may still be years away from launch. In addition to Project Orion, the studio is also working on The Witcher 4 and several other titles within The Witcher franchise, including a remake of the original game released in 2007. As CD Projekt Red continues to expand its portfolio, fans eagerly await further updates on both the Cyberpunk and Witcher series.
