Union Secretary Reviews Aquaculture Advancements in Andhra Pradesh
Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Union Secretary of the Department of Fisheries, visited the MPEDA-RCCA-Brood Multiplication Centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, to assess developments in quality broodstock and seed production for the aquaculture sector. His interactions with scientists, farmers, and technical staff provided valuable insights into ongoing research efforts aimed at enhancing India’s shrimp aquaculture industry.
During his visit, Dr. Likhi identified several challenges facing the sector, including inadequate market linkages, rising costs of inputs and electricity, and the pressing need for training and capacity building among stakeholders. In response, he urged fisheries officials to collaborate with the National Fisheries Development Board and the state government to implement training programs designed to empower local farmers and experts.
Boosting Shrimp Aquaculture
The establishment of the Brood Multiplication Centre (BMC) is poised to significantly bolster India’s shrimp aquaculture sector. It aims to produce and supply Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) Penaeus monodon (black tiger shrimp) broodstock, which will help reduce reliance on imported stock and enhance biosecurity. This self-sufficiency is expected to elevate productivity and sustainability across shrimp farming operations in the region.
India’s marine product exports have reached an impressive ₹73,890.46 crore (USD 8.45 billion) for the fiscal year 2025–26, illustrating the continued growth and global demand for Indian seafood. The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) plays a crucial role in this success by promoting the export-oriented development of marine products, including initiatives for quality seed and broodstock, infrastructure enhancement, and stakeholder capacity building.
Investment in Infrastructure
Andhra Pradesh, the nation’s leading fish producer and seafood exporter, has benefited from significant investments under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The state received approvals totaling ₹2,324.17 crore to bolster its fisheries sector through improved infrastructure. Key developments include the establishment of Integrated Fish Landing Centres and Fishing Harbours aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and marine infrastructure.
The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) Regional Centre in Visakhapatnam serves as a vital resource for marine fisheries research. It focuses on developing technologies for effective broodstock and seed production, ensuring the sustainability and growth of India’s mariculture sector. Equipped with advanced facilities, the centre promotes best practices in aquaculture and provides essential training to farmers, supporting the development of a resilient marine sector.
