Bhagwati Charan Verma (30 August 1903 – 5 October 1981) was a Hindi author. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961.

Life and Career

Bhagwati Charan Verma was born on 30 August 1903, in Safipur, Uttar Pradesh. He pursued his early education in his hometown and later completed his B.A. and L.L.B. from Allahabad University.

Verma’s literary career was marked by his novel “Chitralekha” (1934), which was adapted into two Hindi films in 1941 and 1964. His most celebrated work, however, was the epic five-part novel “Bhoole Bisre Chitra,” for which he received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961. His contributions to Indian literature were further recognized with the Padma Bhushan in 1971.

In addition to his writing, Verma served as a Hindi advisor at All India Radio in Lucknow and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1978. His career spanned various roles, reflecting his versatility and commitment to Hindi literature. He died on 5 October 1981 (age 78 years), in New Delhi.

Award and Legacy

He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961 for his epic five-part novel “Bhoole Bisre Chitra.” His novel “Chitralekha” (1934) is also celebrated and was adapted into two Hindi films. For his significant contributions to Indian literature, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1971.
