Tripura’s Rice Makes International Debut with New Exports
On September 2, 2026, a notable consignment of 18 metric tonnes of NPOP-certified ethnic rice was officially dispatched from Tripura for export to Austria and the Netherlands. This initiative, spearheaded by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), represents a key advancement in expanding market opportunities for local farmers and strengthening Tripura’s presence in international markets through organized, export-oriented production.
Varieties of Ethnic Rice
The consignment features four distinct varieties of NPOP-certified ethnic rice: Aromatic Kali Khasa Rice, Aromatic Harinarayan Rice, Biron Rice (known for its white sticky texture), and Maimi Hanga Rice (a black rice variant). These high-quality rice types have been carefully sourced from local Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) across Tripura, with support from the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA). The export is being managed by M/s Pratithi Organic Foods, a leading exporter of Indian organic agricultural products.
Economic Benefits for Farmers
This export venture not only opens a pathway for local producers and FPCs to engage with international markets, but it also strengthens the State’s involvement in the ever-increasing global demand for certified organic products. Farmers involved in this initiative can expect up to a 40% increase in price realization compared to local market rates, providing a significant economic boost to participating agricultural communities.
Building International Connections
The recent export initiative follows the Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet (RBSM) organized by APEDA in Tripura last month, which successfully connected prospective international buyers with local producers, resulting in tangible business opportunities. The current rice export showcases how such engagements can evolve into concrete international trade for Tripura’s farmers and FPCs.
Flag-off Ceremony Highlights
The ceremony to flag off this important consignment was attended by key dignitaries, including Shri Ratan Lal Nath, Agriculture Minister of Tripura; Shri Abhishek Dev, Chairman of APEDA; and Shri Apurba Roy, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Also present were other officials from APEDA, representatives from the exporting firm and logistics partners, along with progressive rice farmers from the region.
Commitment to Organic Farming
During the event, Minister Ratan Lal Nath expressed pride in this achievement, reflecting the hard work of farmers and FPCs. He emphasized Tripura’s potential in the realm of organic and traditional agricultural products and stated that such initiatives not only help farmers access broader markets but also secure improved pricing and foster sustainable livelihoods. The Minister reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to enhancing the organic farming ecosystem and assisting producers in meeting global standards.
APEDA’s Role and Future Prospects
Chairman Abhishek Dev highlighted the vast potential of the Northeastern region in bolstering India’s organic and agricultural exports. He declared that APEDA is dedicated to linking FPCs and farmers with global markets and enhancing quality systems, certification, and traceability, thereby creating sustainable export opportunities. APEDA aims to collaborate closely with the Government of Tripura and all stakeholders to promote the State’s unique agricultural offerings on an international stage.
This export initiative epitomizes the collaborative efforts of APEDA, the Government of Tripura, and multiple stakeholders across the organic value chain to expand the export of certified products while reinforcing connections between local farmers and international markets.
