Android 16 Introduces Live Activities Support

Google has officially launched the first stable version of Android 16, marking the earliest release of a major Android operating system update in recent years. This new version, initially available for supported Pixel devices, introduces a host of features aimed at enhancing user experience and security. Notable additions include live updates for real-time notifications and advanced security measures through the Advanced Protection program. Future updates will also incorporate a new design language called Material 3 Expressive, along with a desktop-like experience for tablets and larger devices.
Android 16 Compatible Models
The rollout of Android 16 begins with Googleโs Pixel devices. Users with eligible handsets enrolled in the Android Beta for Pixel program will receive the update as an over-the-air (OTA) update. The compatible models include the Google Pixel 9 Series, Pixel 9a, Pixel 8 Series, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 7 Series, and Pixel 6 Series. To check for the Android 16 update on Pixel devices, users can navigate to Settings > System > Software update > System update > Check for updates. Google has indicated that other brands will follow suit, releasing the new operating system for their respective devices in the coming months.
New Features in Android 16
Android 16 introduces several significant features designed to improve functionality and user interaction. One of the standout features is forced notification auto-grouping, which organizes notifications from the same app to reduce clutter. Additionally, the update includes Live Updates, a feature that provides real-time notifications for applications such as ride-sharing and food delivery directly on the lock screen. Google is also working to extend this capability to Samsung’s Now Bar and Live Alerts on Oppo and OnePlus devices.
Furthermore, the Advanced Protection feature aims to safeguard users against various online threats, including malicious websites and scam calls. It centralizes security settings across apps like Google Chrome, Messages, and Phone, with plans to support third-party applications in the future. The update also enhances compatibility with hearing aid devices, allowing users to control them directly from their smartphones, which can improve call quality through built-in microphones.
Desktop Windowing Experience
A notable enhancement in Android 16 is the introduction of a desktop windowing experience, developed in collaboration with Samsung. This feature allows users to manage apps and content on larger screens more efficiently. It enables functionalities such as single app or split-screen modes, mimicking a desktop environment where users can open, move, or resize multiple app windows simultaneously. This capability aims to streamline multitasking and improve productivity on devices with larger displays. The desktop windowing feature is expected to be rolled out to additional compatible devices later this year.
Material 3 Expressive Design
In addition to functional updates, Android 16 will also embrace a new design language known as Material 3 Expressive, which was previewed at Google I/O in May 2025. This design will enhance the visual appeal of the operating system and is set to be included in the Android 16 QPR1 stable release, scheduled for next month. The integration of this design language reflects Google’s commitment to providing a modern and cohesive user experience across its devices.
