Ajinkya Rahane Issues Stark Warning to Gautam Gambhir Amid No.3 Position Turmoil

Ajinkya Rahane has urged India’s cricket management to establish a stable No. 3 batting position, advocating for a long-term commitment to a single player in this crucial role. The former captain expressed concerns about the frequent changes made since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach, which have included multiple players like Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar. Rahane emphasized that this instability could negatively impact players’ careers and their ability to perform effectively.

Rahane’s call for stability comes in light of India’s recent struggles, particularly during the first Test against South Africa, where they lost by 30 runs after dropping Sudharsan in favor of Sundar. Rahane highlighted the need for players to have clarity and time to adapt to the demands of batting at No. 3, a position that requires a different skill set compared to batting lower in the order.

Player Performance and Team Strategy

Rahane specifically mentioned Sai Sudharsan, who had shown promise with scores of 87 and 39 in previous matches. He noted that Sudharsan’s recent performance warranted a longer opportunity to prove himself at No. 3. Rahane pointed out that batting at this position requires specific preparation and mindset, which can be difficult to achieve with constant changes. He stated, “When you bat at No.3, it requires a different skill. Batting at 6 or 7 requires a different skill.”

Rahane also acknowledged Washington Sundar’s talent but expressed concern that moving him to No. 3 could create confusion regarding his role. He stressed that players need security and time to adapt to their batting positions, which is crucial for their development and performance.

The Importance of Long-Term Planning

Rahane’s comments reflect a broader need for the Indian team management to think long-term about their batting lineup. He argued that if they are considering Sudharsan or Sundar for the No. 3 position, they should provide them with the necessary support and time to settle in. “A player has his career on the line. We have to play for our country, so if you want to get a player playing at No.3 for long, then giving them a long rope is important,” Rahane stated.

As India prepares for the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati, there is speculation that Sudharsan may return to the lineup, especially with captain Shubman Gill dealing with an injury. Rahane’s insights could influence the team’s strategy moving forward, emphasizing the need for consistency and confidence in their batting order.
