AI Agents: The Future of SaaS and Business Transformation

The India AI Impact Summit recently hosted a compelling panel discussion featuring industry leaders from major tech firms. With Salil Parekh of Infosys, K. Krithivasan from Tata Consultancy Services, C Vijayakumar of HCL Technologies, and Arundhati Bhattacharya of Salesforce India on the stage, the focus was on exploring the impact of AI agents on the traditional Software as a Service (SaaS) model. Moderated by Amitabh Kant, the session examined how these cutting-edge technologies might disrupt existing business frameworks.

In her remarks, Arundhati Bhattacharya raised important considerations regarding recent market fluctuations influenced by AI developments. She warned against oversimplifying the dynamics of the SaaS model. “Markets will say a lot of things, and not all of it comes true,” she explained, adding that understanding workflows, recognizing customer pain points, and delivering sustainable solutions requires a more nuanced approach. Bhattacharya pointed out that while working methods are evolving, focusing on real customer value will determine long-term success in the AI landscape.

K. Krithivasan offered insights from the service sector, noting a significant transformation in the role of software engineers. “We are entering an era where the role of the software engineer is shifting toward high-level architecture and rigorous validation,” he stated. He asserted that, despite the productivity gains promised by AI, successful enterprise adoption requires a significant foundation, including data organization and modernizing applications. Rather than anticipating a decrease in sector opportunities, he envisions considerable growth in productivity and complexity.

C Vijayakumar shared similar sentiments, emphasizing that enterprises need more than just generic models for efficient AI adoption. He pointed out the current gap between foundational AI capabilities and enterprise-level performance. HCL Technologies is actively addressing this by developing specialized services meant to enhance AI application in the business realm.

Acknowledging the vast opportunities presented by AI, Salil Parekh described a transformative potential estimated at $300 billion. He highlighted how this technology could make previously unfeasible tasks economically viable, particularly in areas like legacy modernization. Infosys is working on orchestration platforms that integrate foundational models with specialized agents to drive tangible business value.

The panelists collectively conveyed a critical message: while AI agents are set to redefine business and operational models, they will not make existing frameworks obsolete in an instant. The key to thriving in this AI-driven era will be the ability to adapt quickly, maintain enterprise readiness, orchestrate effectively, and continuously address complex customer needs within the evolving digital landscape.
