India Launches 9th National Summit on Healthcare Innovations

Puri, Odisha โ€“ Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda inaugurated the 9th National Summit on Good & Replicable Practices and Innovation in the Public Healthcare System today in Puri, Odisha. The event, attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Health Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, and MP Dr. Sambit Patra, aims to showcase successful healthcare practices and foster knowledge sharing among states and union territories.

Summit Focuses on Best Practices in Healthcare

The two-day summit is designed to document and highlight various best practices and innovations implemented by states and union territories to tackle public health challenges. It serves as a platform for participants to share insights and learn from one another’s experiences. Minister Nadda emphasized the importance of collaboration in enhancing healthcare delivery across India.

During his address, Nadda noted significant advancements in India’s healthcare system since 2014, particularly following the introduction of the National Health Policy in 2017. This policy marked a shift towards a more comprehensive approach to healthcare, integrating preventive, promotive, and curative aspects. He underscored the government’s commitment to improving both primary and tertiary healthcare services, ensuring that quality and affordability remain at the forefront of healthcare initiatives.

Key Achievements in Maternal and Child Health

Nadda highlighted the remarkable progress made in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in India. He stated that the decline in maternal mortality is twice the global average, showcasing the effectiveness of grassroots healthcare initiatives. The Union Minister praised Odisha for its notable improvements in these areas, reflecting the state’s commitment to enhancing maternal and child health services.

The Minister also pointed out the significant reduction in malaria cases as acknowledged by the World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report 2024. Additionally, he mentioned a 17.7% decline in tuberculosis incidence from 2015 to 2023, which surpasses the global average decline. Nadda reaffirmed India’s dedication to eradicating tuberculosis, despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and highlighted the ongoing 100-Day TB Elimination Campaign.

Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure and Services

The summit also addressed the growing threat of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the need for lifestyle changes among the population. Nadda commended the National Health Mission’s Intensified Special NCD Screening Drive, which offers free screenings for diabetes, hypertension, and various cancers. He cited a recent study indicating that patients enrolled in the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana experienced a 90% increase in access to timely cancer treatment.

Looking ahead, Nadda announced plans to establish day care cancer centers in every district within the next three years, with 200 districts targeted for this year. He emphasized the role of telemedicine in further strengthening healthcare delivery across the nation.

Odisha’s Commitment to Health and Wellness

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed Odisha’s pivotal role in the Union Government’s vision for a healthier India. He highlighted the merging of the state’s Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana with the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which will enhance access to healthcare for over 4.5 crore people, particularly benefiting migrant workers.

Majhi also announced the establishment of several national institutes in Odisha, including those focused on yoga, pharmaceutical education, and speech and hearing. He emphasized the state’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure, aiming for all districts to have hospitals equipped to provide comprehensive services.

Dr. Mukesh Mahaling further noted that Odisha has achieved over 92% in institutional deliveries and is actively working to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. He assured that cancer treatment services are now available in district hospitals, reflecting the state’s dedication to improving healthcare access.

The summit concluded with the release of several key publications, including a Coffee Table Book on best practices and reports from various health initiatives. The event underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance public health systems across India through collaboration and innovation.
