Microsoft Expands Game Offerings on PlayStation 5

In a surprising move, Microsoft is set to release two of its first-party games on the PlayStation 5 in 2025. The titles, Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, are both real-time strategy games developed by Xbox Game Studios. This announcement, made by World’s Edge, marks a significant shift in Microsoft’s approach to gaming, as it embraces a multi-platform strategy. The games will not only be available on PS5 but will also support cross-play across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms. This initiative aims to enhance the gaming experience and foster a larger community among players.

Age of Mythology: Retold Coming to PS5 in March

One of the most anticipated releases is Age of Mythology: Retold, which will launch on PlayStation 5 on March 4, 2025. This remastered version of the classic 2002 game brings back beloved characters and gameplay mechanics. Alongside the main game, players can look forward to the new Immortal Pillars expansion, which will be available across all platforms. Michael Mann, head of World’s Edge, expressed excitement about welcoming PS5 players to the game. He stated that players will have the opportunity to embark on adventures with Arkantos, select their pantheon, and engage in battles for divine blessings.

For those eager to dive into the game early, pre-purchasing the Premium Edition will grant five-day early access starting February 27. This edition also includes access to the Immortal Pillars expansion and additional content. Starting on March 4, all updates for the game will be released simultaneously across Steam, Windows Store, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. This approach ensures that all players, regardless of their platform, can enjoy the latest features and improvements together, fostering a unified gaming experience.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Coming to PS5 in Spring 2025

The second title, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, is also set to make its debut on PlayStation 5 in Spring 2025. While a specific release date has not been announced, the developers have hinted at an exciting DLC expansion that will accompany the launch. This expansion promises to introduce new content and civilizations, enhancing the gameplay experience for both new and returning players.

World’s Edge has also revealed plans for two new DLCs for Age of Empires IV, with the first, titled Knights of Cross and Rose, scheduled for release in the same year. The addition of these titles to the PS5 library is part of a broader strategy by Microsoft to make its games available on rival platforms. This move aligns with Xbox chief Phil Spencer’s vision of creating a more inclusive gaming environment, where players can enjoy their favorite titles regardless of the console they own.

Microsoft’s Multi-Platform Strategy

This shift towards a multi-platform strategy is a significant change for Microsoft. In recent years, the company has focused on expanding its gaming ecosystem beyond Xbox consoles. By bringing popular titles to PlayStation and other platforms, Microsoft aims to reach a wider audience and strengthen its gaming community. Phil Spencer emphasized that no Xbox exclusive title is off-limits when it comes to launching on rival platforms.

Spencer believes that this strategy will not only benefit players but also enhance Microsoft’s business model. By allowing more players to access their games, Microsoft can invest in developing a robust lineup of titles. This approach has already begun to bear fruit, as evidenced by the upcoming release of Forza Horizon 5 on PS5, which was announced just last week. As Microsoft continues to embrace this new direction, gamers can expect more exciting announcements and releases in the future.
