NHAI Launches Wildlife Conservation Plan for National Highways
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taking significant steps to integrate wildlife conservation into the planning and execution of National Highway projects. During the recent National Wildlife Week, celebrated from October 2-8, 2026, NHAI unveiled a comprehensive document titled ‘Wildlife Mitigation Measures & Structures.’ The launch, led by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Minister for Road Transport and Highways, took place at the _Chintan Shivir_ in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, highlighting NHAI’s commitment to balance infrastructure development with environmental sustainability.
Over the past five years, the NHAI has invested approximately Rs. 19,700 crores in wildlife mitigation infrastructure and related environmental initiatives. These efforts aim to tackle critical issues such as habitat fragmentation, the barrier effect of highways, and dangerous wildlife-vehicle collisions, all while ensuring smooth traffic flow.
Innovative Mitigation Structures
The newly released document presents an organized framework for wildlife mitigation, which includes both structural and non-structural measures. Structural interventions like underpasses, overpasses, culverts, and canopy crossings, coupled with non-structural solutions such as signage, fencing, and speed regulation, are essential for the safe coexistence of wildlife and road users. Currently, over 2,150 wildlife mitigation structures have either been constructed or proposed along national highways across India.
Financial allocations for these structural measures include around Rs. 4,600 crores for animal underpasses, Rs. 650 crores for animal overpasses, Rs. 8,300 crores for viaducts, Rs. 2,800 crores for tunnels, Rs. 2,500 crores for major bridges, and Rs. 500 crores for minor bridges. These infrastructures are designed to facilitate wildlife movement and maintain essential ecological connectivity between habitats.
Complementary Non-Structural Measures
In addition to these important structural initiatives, NHAI is implementing non-structural measures focused on minimizing disturbances to wildlife and improving habitat conditions. This includes the installation of noise barriers, reptile crossings, and systems for rainwater harvesting aimed at wildlife management.
NHAI is also taking active steps in monitoring wildlife movement. They’ve implemented techniques such as camera trapping to analyze animal behavior and assess the effectiveness of the mitigation measures. Identifying wildlife-vehicle collision hotspots allows for timely interventions, including the placement of speed regulation signs and safety boards.
Collaboration for Conservation
The document emphasizes the necessity of collaboration between conservation organizations and infrastructure agencies. NHAI’s strategic approach ensures that mitigation measures are implemented throughout various phases of National Highway development. This commitment allows for infrastructure expansion to proceed in harmony with biodiversity conservation and compliance with environmental laws. The full document is accessible on the NHAI website.
NHAI’s recent initiatives and infrastructure enhancements reflect an unwavering dedication to environmental protection while developing National Highway systems. This document serves as a valuable reference for the diverse measures being taken to safeguard wildlife across highway projects in India.
