India to Launch JOSH Teams for TB Elimination

In a landmark initiative to enhance community involvement in the battle against tuberculosis (TB), the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare is set to unveil the **JOSH (Joint Squad for Health) Teams** on **October 8, 2026**, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This program, created in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Ministry of Defence, aims to mobilize youth-led efforts to spread the message of **TB Mukt Bharat** across **55 districts in 11 states**.

The national launch will be spearheaded by Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, along with notable officials including Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Labour & Employment, Shri Sanjay Seth, Minister of State for Defence, and Smt. Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi. The event will gather high-ranking officials and stakeholders from involved ministries, elected representatives, Class-I Officers, MY Bharat Volunteers, NCC Cadets, and other contributors committed to India’s TB elimination drive.

Enhancing Youth Engagement in TB Awareness

The JOSH Teams initiative is designed as an organized mechanism to channel the enthusiasm and outreach of India’s youth into effective community action against TB. By integrating Class-I Officers, MY Bharat Volunteers, and NCC Cadets, the program combines strong administrative leadership with the extensive community engagement potential of youth organizations. This collaborative effort is aimed at spreading awareness at the Block/Ward and community levels, bringing the message of TB Mukt Bharat closer to where people live and work.

Through outreach and community involvement, JOSH Teams will focus on disseminating critical information about TB symptoms, prevention, timely diagnosis, and completing treatments. The initiative also seeks to dismantle myths and stigma surrounding TB, encouraging individuals and families to actively participate in the national TB elimination movement.

Fostering Community Ownership

The effort reflects a robust commitment to enhancing community participation and leveraging **Jan Bhagidari**—the idea of community engagement—as a cornerstone of India’s fight against TB. In 2025, a remarkable achievement was recorded with **67,933 Panchayats** across **697 districts** being recognized as TB Mukt, underscoring the significant role of health workers, community members, and elected officials in the national agenda.

As JOSH Teams galvanize the spirit of community involvement through youth networks, they aim to further spread awareness and mobilize collective participation in the fight against TB.

A Comprehensive Approach to Tuberculosis Elimination

The establishment of JOSH Teams exemplifies the Government’s holistic approach to TB elimination, uniting the resources and outreach capabilities from health, youth, and defense sectors. The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare will spearhead the public health framework, while the other ministries will support grassroots mobilization efforts.

This initiative signifies the Government’s dedication to fostering convergence across various ministries and sectors, aiming for a collaborative impact towards a unified national goal. The launch of the JOSH Teams is a pivotal advancement in building a community-oriented response to TB, calling for coordinated efforts among ministries, states, health workers, and citizens. Through increased grassroots initiatives and community participation, JOSH Teams will play a vital role in realizing the vision of a TB Mukt Bharat.
