HDFC and Kotak: A Shared Focus on Banking Strategies During Anup’s Day
MUMBAI: HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank have appointed new CEOs, ending a period of uncertainty in the banking sector. Anup Bagchi will take over as Managing Director and CEO of HDFC Bank on October 27, succeeding Sashidhar Jagdishan. Anup Kumar Saha will become the CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank for a three-year term starting January 1, 2027, replacing Ashok Vaswani. Both new CEOs are 55 years old, hail from West Bengal, and are alumni of prestigious IIT and IIM institutions.
Bagchi brings over 30 years of experience in banking, having spent most of his career with the ICICI Group. He served as executive director at ICICI Bank from 2017 to 2023, where he oversaw various banking sectors, including retail and wholesale. Most recently, he was the MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, where he led the company to surpass an annualized premium equivalent of ₹10,000 crore for the first time in FY25, with a nearly 40% increase in profit after tax.
Focus on Growth and Synergies
As the first outsider to lead HDFC Bank since its inception in 1994, Bagchi will prioritize loan growth and credit-deposit dynamics amid a competitive rate environment. He will also work on leveraging synergies from the recent merger with HDFC. Following RBI’s approval of his appointment and remuneration, Bagchi will be inducted as an additional director on October 2, pending shareholder approval. His term is set to last until October 26, 2029.
Saha, currently a whole-time director at Kotak, joined the bank in January 2026 and has been responsible for retail banking and data analytics. He previously served as MD and CEO of Bajaj Finance and has over 32 years of experience in financial services. His tenure at ICICI Bank included leadership roles in retail secured assets and credit cards. Kotak chairman C S Rajan expressed confidence in Saha’s ability to drive sustainable growth for the franchise. As of June 30, Kotak Mahindra Group operated 5,916 branches and reported a consolidated balance sheet of ₹10.1 lakh crore.
