Iran’s Discreet Oil Movement: Millions of Barrels Transported Through Hormuz Amid U.S. Oversight
As tensions escalate between the United States and Iran, supertankers are continuing to navigate the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has maintained oil tanker movements through this critical waterway, even as the U.S. prepares to reinstate a blockade on Iranian ports. The situation has become increasingly perilous due to rising attacks on vessels from both nations.
Iran’s Ship Movements
Recent ship-tracking data from Bloomberg indicates that six U.S.-sanctioned supertankers, capable of carrying a combined 12 million barrels of crude, have crossed into the Gulf of Oman while keeping their transponders off. These movements occurred after the U.S. withdrew a temporary waiver that had allowed Iran to export oil on July 7. The conditions in the Strait of Hormuz have deteriorated since that time, with the White House set to reimpose its blockade at 4 p.m. Washington time on Tuesday.
Visible vessel movements through the Strait of Hormuz nearly halted early Tuesday, with only one bulk carrier and two liquefied petroleum gas carriers reported in the area. There is a possibility that additional non-Iranian vessels are also transiting without broadcasting their positions. Alongside the six Iranian supertankers, several other U.S.-sanctioned vessels linked to Tehran have passed through the Strait since July 7, contributing to Iran’s export of 57 million barrels of crude during this period.
Trump’s Naval Blockade Threat
President Trump announced on Monday that the U.S. would restore its blockade of Iranian shipping in the Gulf, emphasizing the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz open amid ongoing missile and drone attacks. This renewed conflict complicates efforts for an interim agreement to de-escalate tensions in the region and has led to rising oil prices.
Trump stated, “The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran. We are reinstating THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE.” He also proposed a 20% toll on cargoes transiting the waterway. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi mocked the toll suggestion, asserting that Iran has historically been the guardian of the Strait. Iran’s military command has declared that the U.S. lacks authority over the waterway, asserting that Washington will not be allowed to interfere in its management.
