NCR Air Quality Task Force Reviews Enforcement Actions
The Enforcement Task Force (ETF) of the Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region (NCR) has conducted a comprehensive review of its enforcement actions and compliance status during its 134th meeting held on July 6, 2026. The meeting highlighted significant inspections carried out by the Commission’s Flying Squads over a 17-day period, revealing critical insights into air quality management efforts in the region.
Between June 14 and June 30, 2026, the Flying Squads performed 173 inspections. These were distributed across various sectors, including 15 inspections at construction and demolition (C&D) sites, 91 in the industrial sector, and 67 related to diesel generator (DG) sets. The inspections uncovered 62 violations, broken down into 7 at C&D sites, 31 within the industrial sector, and 24 related to DG sets.
Following these inspections, the ETF proposed significant enforcement measures, including the closure of four units/projects and sealing of 27 DG sets. There were also six compliance orders issued, along with Environmental Compensation (EC) imposed in 17 instances. This proactive approach aims to ensure adherence to environmental norms effectively.
Previous Action Review and Ensuring Compliance
The ETF also discussed the progress made since the previous meeting, the 133rd session. Actionable cases concerning the industrial sector, C&D sites, and DG sets were reviewed meticulously, with agencies confirming engagement on all outlined issues. Notably, seven Resumption Orders for C&D sites have been issued, facilitating compliance verification, which included two in Uttar Pradesh and five in Haryana.
Ongoing Enforcement Status
As of the latest meeting, the ETF reported that the Flying Squads have inspected a total of 27,750 units, projects, and entities. The outcome of these inspections has been substantial, resulting in the issuance of 1,802 Closure Directions. Out of these, 1,424 Resumption Orders were granted after compliance verification. Additionally, 123 cases have been forwarded to respective State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) for final decisions, while 255 entities are still under examination regarding Resumption Orders.
The Commission reinforced the necessity for a more robust enforcement mechanism and stressed the importance of timely compliance verification and improved coordination among implementing agencies. This is essential for the effective management of air pollution in the NCR. It also pointed out the need to enhance inspection efficiency, increase accountability, and expedite enforcement actions in key sectors contributing to air pollution, including industrial emissions, DG sets, and C&D activities.
