Rising Demand for Skilled Blue-Collar Workers as AI Technology Expands

NEW DELHI: Demand for skilled trades in India has surged dramatically, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). An analysis by talent firm Randstad reveals that job postings for electricians have increased by 242%, HVAC technicians by 200%, and robotics technicians by over 500% in the past four years. This trend highlights a shift in the labor market, with skilled technical roles outpacing traditional entry-level positions.

The analysis indicates a significant “labor flip,” where skilled blue-collar workers are becoming increasingly sought after. These workers, who hold formal certifications or degrees, are essential for supporting the infrastructure needed for AI technologies. Viswanath P S, MD & CEO of Randstad India, emphasized that every AI advancement requires a physical foundation, including upgraded power grids and automated factories.

As demand for skilled trades rises, compensation structures are also changing. The salary gap between skilled blue-collar workers and entry-level white-collar employees is narrowing. Average blue-collar salaries in India are growing at 5.7% annually, compared to 4% for entry-level white-collar roles. Currently, the average salary for blue-collar workers stands at $2,612, with specialized roles like robotics mechanics earning up to $9,106 annually.

The hiring landscape reflects this shift, with blue-collar job volumes increasing by 93% from 2022 to 2026, driven by infrastructure development and AI-related needs. Unlike many Western economies facing declines in desk-based jobs, India’s labor market is expanding across both blue-collar and white-collar sectors, with the latter growing by over 40%.
