As Temperatures Climb, Air Conditioning Companies Face Challenges with Gas Supply

Ahead of the peak summer season, air conditioner manufacturers in India are grappling with supply chain challenges stemming from geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Industry executives report that restricted supplies of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and a shortage of petrochemicals are beginning to impact production. While there is no major disruption currently, the situation could worsen, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers already facing increased costs for new air conditioning units.

Production Challenges Amid Geopolitical Tensions

The ongoing conflict in West Asia has created supply-side constraints for essential materials used in air conditioner manufacturing. Vikas Gupta, Managing Director of PG Electroplast, highlighted the challenges posed by the limited availability of LPG and piped natural gas (PNG), which are crucial for various manufacturing processes. Additionally, the scarcity of petrochemicals, which are vital for producing polymers used in plastic components, is disrupting daily production activities. Gupta expressed hope that the situation would improve as the summer progresses, especially with rising temperatures across India and forecasts predicting the potential impact of El Niño later this year.

Kamal Nandi, the business head and Executive Vice President at Godrej Enterprises Group, echoed these concerns, noting that the geopolitical situation has started to affect the procurement of key input materials. The company is actively working with vendors to optimize procurement strategies to ensure production continuity. The limited supply of LPG, along with a shortage of essential plastic raw materials like polypropylene and polystyrene, has led to sharp price increases, further complicating the manufacturing landscape.

Rising Costs and Consumer Impact

The combination of new energy regulations and rising commodity costs has already resulted in a price increase of approximately 5% for air conditioning units. B. Thiagarajan, Managing Director of Blue Star, indicated that an additional price hike of 8% to 10% may be on the horizon due to these ongoing challenges. This situation raises concerns for consumers, who may face higher prices for air conditioning units just as the demand for cooling solutions surges with the onset of summer.

Industry experts warn that the concentration of LPG imports from West Asia poses a significant vulnerability for India. Approximately 88% of the country’s LPG imports come from this region, accounting for about 54% of its total LPG demand. Sumit Pokharna, Vice President of fundamental research at Kotak Securities, cautioned that if supply disruptions persist, the resulting supply gap could be substantial, further straining both manufacturers and consumers.

Exploring Alternatives and Future Strategies

In response to the supply challenges, some manufacturers are exploring alternative methods for production. Ajay Singhania, Managing Director and CEO of Epack Durable, mentioned that the company is considering different approaches for brazing copper in air conditioning units, even though this may lead to increased production costs. While there has not yet been a loss in production, gas agencies have indicated that future challenges could arise if the supply crunch continues.

To adapt to changing market demands, Epack Durable is also focusing on ramping up production of induction cooktops, which have seen a surge in demand. This strategic pivot reflects the broader industry trend of seeking new opportunities amid supply chain disruptions. As manufacturers navigate these challenges, the emphasis remains on maintaining production levels while addressing the rising costs associated with essential materials.

Looking Ahead: Industry Outlook

As the summer season approaches, the air conditioning industry is bracing for potential supply challenges that could impact both production and pricing. With rising temperatures already being felt in parts of India, the demand for cooling solutions is expected to increase. However, the ongoing geopolitical tensions and their effects on supply chains present a significant hurdle for manufacturers.

Industry leaders are hopeful that the situation will stabilize, allowing for a smoother production process as the peak season unfolds. Nonetheless, the current landscape underscores the importance of strategic planning and adaptability in the face of external pressures. As companies work to mitigate the impact of supply constraints, consumers may need to prepare for potential price increases and limited availability of air conditioning units in the coming months.
