Rajpal Yadav Set to Surrender at Tihar Jail Following Delhi HC Ruling on Cheque Bounce Case

The Delhi High Court has denied Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav’s final request to delay his surrender in a long-standing cheque bounce case. Following the court’s decision, Yadav announced that he would report to Tihar Jail later that day to begin serving his sentence. The court’s ruling underscores the judiciary’s firm stance on compliance in financial disputes, particularly under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

High Court’s Firm Stance

On Thursday, the Delhi High Court dismissed Rajpal Yadav’s plea for additional time to settle outstanding payments owed to Murli Projects Private Limited. The actor was present in court when the bench, led by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, refused to grant any further extensions. The court emphasized that it would only hear Yadav’s case after he surrendered to jail authorities. This decision came after Yadav failed to comply with a previous order to surrender on Wednesday.

Yadav’s legal counsel, senior advocate Abhijat, informed the court that a payment of Rs 25 lakhs would be made on the same day, and a tentative repayment schedule had been established between the parties. However, the bench declined to entertain this request, highlighting that Yadav had already been given leniency and had not fulfilled his previous commitments to the court.

Background of the Case

The legal troubles for Rajpal Yadav stem from a conviction in May 2024 related to a cheque bounce case. A sessions court sentenced him to six months in prison, but the High Court later suspended the sentence on the condition that Yadav would work towards a settlement with the complainant. Unfortunately, this arrangement fell through, as Yadav missed several deadlines to make the required payments.

On February 2, the High Court ordered Yadav to surrender within two days after rejecting his explanations for the delayed payments. One of his claims involved a typographical error in an earlier demand draft, but the court noted that he had not taken steps to correct the mistake or make significant progress toward settling the matter.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

The High Court’s ruling reflects a broader judicial intolerance for repeated non-compliance with court orders, especially in financial disputes governed by the Negotiable Instruments Act. The court’s decision to deny Yadav’s plea for an extension serves as a reminder of the legal system’s commitment to upholding financial accountability.

Following the court’s refusal to grant him more time, Yadav’s counsel confirmed that the actor would surrender at Tihar Jail on Thursday. After surrendering, Yadav may seek further relief or file applications related to his case, but the immediate focus will be on his compliance with the court’s orders. The situation highlights the importance of adhering to legal obligations and the potential consequences of failing to do so, particularly for public figures like Yadav.
